| Eyes, To Trim or Not To Trim Read all I could find about tearing and trimming but still have some questions. Buster is 4 1/2 months and the breeder trimmed his eyes before I picked him up. About how long does it take to grow the eye hairs into a top knot? My husband thinks "looking Butch" is cuter for a male and I don't mind but I'm worried about the tearing. He goes tomorrow for his first professional cut. What to do, what to do? |

YT 500 Club Member | Eyes For sure have the hair around his eyes trimmed. Healthier for them. Less bacteria getting into eye. You can still have a top knot. Don't need eye hair for that. Good luck at groomers. I just had my 13 week old boy at the groomers today. Had just a few trims to do. The eyes were one of them. He was a total brat while there. Thank goodness didn't take more than 30 min. |

| I don't trim hair around the eyes. It seems like when they start growing back out they irritate the eyes and cause tearing. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Do not trim the lower eye hair Let it grow out and long - Best long term - Short term there might be some irritation - but you deal with this daily for a few weeks until the lower eye hair settles down.

| I prefer trim for several reasons. For one, neither of my furbutts will tolerate top knots. And I find it easier to keep their eyes "clean" when it's short. The only thing is that you'd have to keep it up. Magnus/Zoey are good with staying still when I'm trimming around their eyes so I have no issues. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I prefer not to trim at all around the eyes.

As for time it grows out... I'd say it's like any human. Some ppls hair grows out faster than others. I think furbutts are the same way. LOL In the meantime, you can put some Vaseline or something of the sort to weigh it down till it grows out long enough. | |

| I would say, based on my experience, that trimming around the eyes is more problematic than not. I have a boy, too, but the groomers are asked to leave his eye hair alone so that he has a nice mustache which falls as part of his beard and is irrespective of his topknot or lack thereof. They can trim up your boys' mustache and beard and still give him a nice cut on the head so that you don't have to worry about a topknot. When the eye hair grows long, it falls flat against the face which means you don't have to worry about keeping short hairs maintained so that they do not poke his eyes when the hair starts to grow out. |
