Red Mark on Tummy I recently found on my yorkie a little red mark on his lower tummy right by his back leg. I was wondering what it could be. I had just brought him to the vet on tuesday...he had his shots and they did an overall check up on him and he was fine. Is it just a bruise on him? Or should i be worried?

Watch this spot for a while. As long as there is only one spot, and it doesn't change ---I'm not sure I would be too concerned. He may have injuried himself there and have bled under the skin. If this is the case, the spot should disappear in time. If more spots appear, be sure and take your pup to the vet. My vet noticed several red spots on my dog's stomach during a routine checkup. She did blood work, and, unfortunately, my dog had thrombocytopenia. This is a serious blood disorder (the platelet count becomes very low and the blood no longer clots as it should). This disorder needs aggressive treatment. With only one spot, I wouldn't be too concerned - but be sure and keep an eye on his stomach. Let's hope this just goes away! Carol Jean

First of all - don't worry about thrombocytopenia - your puppy probably does not have this. With thrombocytopenia, my dog's blood had became so thin (not clotting) that she was literally bleeding under her skin. And it was mainly noticeable on her stomach area (especially since there is no hair in that area). This condition worsens and can causes stomach, rectal, ear, mouth, and bleeding everywhere. Rather than scare you - I can tell you that my dog was given a lot of different medicines and eventually was completely well again. With just one spot - remember that even a pinch or a puncture wound can cause bleeding under the skin that might stay for a while. One poster just mentioned ringworm. I'm not sure exactly how that presents. Just keep an eye on your dog. If she develops additional spots, take her to the vet, and she still probably does not have the condition that my dog had. She could have any number of problems - and many that might not be serious at all. Good luck! Keep in touch. Carol Jean

my baby has allergies to his flea shampoo (and fleas) and he breaks out in red welts... we are flea free, but when i used the shampoo on him after i would visit my moms house he would have these red spots all over his tummy area. and you could feel that the skin was different, almost like a blister.... obviously it was an allergic reaction, so we had to stop using the shampoo and it cleared up right away... could you take a picture so we could see what you are describing?

| Watch to see that it doesn't form a white spot on the red, it could be an early sign of a staph infection, which can occur because of allergies or it could be a yeast infection. If there is only 1 spot try not to fret.

Me again - is it possible that he has always had this little red spot. Could it be a birthmark? If he continues to have only the one spot and it stays the same -- maybe it's just a pigmentation problem. My daughter has a small red area on her inner arm that has been there all her life. As she has gotten older, it has become smaller and a little lighter in color --but it is still there! I just don't want you to spend too much time worrying about this one spot. Again - just watch your pups stomach for a while - and if more spots occur, take her to the vet. Even then, it may well be nothing serious. I looked at my little guy Yorkies belly. He has some dark spots - I'm sure I have noticed these before. And, I'm sure they are harmless and will be there forever. He is extremely healthy and has been to the vet several times and these have never been mentioned. Keep in touch - Carol Jean
