If a stray unknown dog approaches me in a manner I feel is dangerous....He's gonna get sprayed. In my situation unfortunately I believe Cody may be dog aggressive, so said his obedience instructor, while attending obedience sessions Cody would lunge at the dog used for these sessions, instructor said he was staring down the other dog, which is a sign of challenge, this is dangerous for Cody on walks if another dog approaches, Cody could set off another dog into attack mode, so I will do what I need to do to protect my dog.

| ![]() I think I am going to call the police department in the municipality where I walk my dogs and see what is legal and see what they suggest. My hubby just bought a gun and we have to take shooting class and get our conceal carry permits. Neither of us has shot before but we think it is time we learn. I have always been afraid of guns. Just holding one makes me nervous. Not planning to use it on a dog unless it is a life threatening situation.

| ![]() I agree. I don't think my husband ever held a gun before. I told him to never point a gun, even unloaded, towards a person. He was looking at the gun turning it over inspecting it and I had to tell him FOUR TIMES within five minutes that he was pointing it right at my head. We don't have any ammo yet. Thank God. I AM really nervous about it. REALLY nervous.

1. Treat every firearm as if it's loaded. Even if you're absolutely certain a gun is unloaded, still follow these rules for safe gun handling. You want these rules to be natural habits; holding yourself to them each and every time helps make them so. 2. Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. Accept the mindset to always keep your gun pointed in a direction that would safely stop the bullet should it discharge. At an ADTA event, if you're not on the firing line, your gun should stay holstered muzzle-down, cased, or locked open and pointing down and away from people. If you're on the firing line, your gun should stay pointed downrange, at the bullet trap backstop at the end of the range. If you will be cleaning or handling your unloaded gun at home, find a safe direction ahead of time -- bullets penetrate floors, ceiling, windows, and walls. Masonry, a full bookcase, a full freezer, downward (if you're on the ground floor), or even a five gallon bucket of sand may be good options. 3. Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it. You are responsible for the entire path of every bullet you fire from your gun. If you hit your intended target, the bullet may still continue through. ADTA live-fire events are conducted at locations with designated bullet trap backstops or berms to help contain rounds to the intended range area; you are responsible for only aiming in directions where you can be assured the bullet will be safely stopped. 4. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire. At ADTA events, when you're holding a gun but not shooting, you'll hear us ask you to "index" your trigger finger. This means to keep your trigger finger straight, and to raise it up to rest flat alongside the body of your gun. Whenever you are not on target and ready to fire, your trigger finger should always be outside the trigger guard and resting straight and flat alongside the body of your gun. | |

| ![]() He really bought the gun for home protection. To keep near the bed and shoot if someone comes in the house at night. I don't think we will take it to the park but we need to learn to use it, and learn gun safety, that's for sure. Mike, thanks for posting the precautions.

| ![]() Wow, a lot of responsibility. Just thinking that a bullet could go through our wall into the house next door and kill their baby scares me. I think I want to take the gun back and take our chances on the home invasion thing. I'm serious.

| ![]() No.. what caliber?? Use Hollow points. They were made NOT to over penetrate. You practice with FMJ because the are cheap. Don't let me scare you. Just get some range time. With training you will be safe. i was just making a point not to be careless. |

| ![]() We were raised shooting and my father drove home every point you just made. I have five young children and honestly have a lot of hesitation with toy guns even because those basic precautions are driving so strongly in my mind. I work in livestock an see dumb young men pointing pellet guns in the most stupid, thoughtless directions you could imagine (I'm right here!) somebody never taught them, thank you for your good sense precautionary statements. Had a friend die of accidental discharge during cleaning last year- sad stories. Competent training creates fire arm safety, your advocacy for appropriate managment and safety training is appreciated.
