2 Yorkies better then 1 ?

Chester is going on 5 months old next week.

We were thinking of getting him a friend, to keep him company.

Doesn't have to be another a Yorkie, but we just love them I'm open to suggestions , i keep seeing the name Brewier pop up?

My concern is we have a 14+ year old cat which we haven't even gotten Chester and him together much, other then rubbing noses. Anything more, Chester gets to excited , and then I have to pull them away before the cat wacks him

I work during the day, and the wife works 3 nights a week 12 hour shifts at the hospital

Would having two Yorkies, maybe getting little more mature one keep each other company?

My friend just got a 2nd Maltesse , and said the whole dynamics changed by having two dogs now

The Vet last week actually encouraged it, and said its easier to manage two of them, they keep each other company

Here's my thoughts; it's a lot of work and time... I had 2 puppies before but I waited until my first puppy was well associated with ppl and other dogs trained to go potty this like that. To me it was important because training the new puppy wasn't too hard for me since she followed everything my other puppy did. That was yrs ago and now I'm searching for a new puppy as a playmate for my honey buns. I love biewer puppies they are so cute but I'll leave the specific info about them to the pros

We're very lucky to have Chester. He's really such a good boy.

He has really good disposition , we really are not sure about two dogs, that's why we thought we would ask.

Between me working all week 8am to 5pm, and my wife works 3 nights a week, and sleeps during the day, we really need a low energy, quit , lap dog

Chester so far is perfect

We had a little mishap with him for a little while barking at night, but that was because we bought him camping, and he slept with us for the first time for 4 days straight

We bought him home, back into the kitchen at night to sleep. And he went nuts, lol

He's now back into his routine. All though I been cheating and the nights my wife's working I sleep with Chester in the other bedroom. Now I find my wife doing the same during the day, lol

Good luck keeping that boy out of your bed I had different plans too (I was worried about her safety in the bed- she lives in it now!) I personally think it would be best to wait until Chester is really well trained and socialized and potty trained before adding another pup so he can be the big brother and set the example, so your bond is built and right and safe and you are the unquestioned pack leader. But I have only one dog and think my Lilah (2 yrs old in December) will get a sister next spring and she has been with us since she was twelve weeks old. I think it is a good plan to have groomjng and hygeine routines already established etc etc before adding another pup but again we are singletons so far so I will have to just let you know how that goes for us cause I'm not there yet! good luck whatever your family chooses

I have a papilon(which i would NOT recomend to hyper and does not like outside dogs. She has accepted boo tho). But having two dogs is good in the since i can leave my yorkie with her and they as far as i know do not cry for us. They have a ball playing together and its a ball watching them. BUT they take a lot more time . Harder training two at a time. I have had a lot of different breeds over my lifetime. This yorky to me so far has been the most dossel easy going breed. My first tho was my doxie. She got along with everyone. Smart and loving. But were seniors and are home most of the time. It keeps us very busy.

I would also recommend waiting until Chester is trained before adding another pup to your family. I have 3 & think that's the perfect number. That way one can come with me & no one is home alone. That being said, it's hard to train more than one at a time. I have always adopted teens/adults, so potty training is not so much the issue. The issue is more of basic training. I insist on "here", sit, down, & stay. Right now I'm working with Joey, who came to me knowing NOHING. We are working on "here" & "watch me". His training is going very slowly because he's somewhat timid. and not at all food motivated!

We say, high five Chester, and we put hands out, and he stands on his hind legs and puts both paws on each hand, and gives us high fives, lol

He's just about potty trained. He only wakes us up to go out, then goes back to bed at night

This morning he mad it till 6:20am, my wife let him out he did his thing, but came in and didn't want to go back a sleep till 9am, which he does just about everyday, but he usually sleeps in till at least 7am

We don't let him take naps anymore past 4pm, so by 10-10:30pm he's tired, sleeps like a baby

Today, we had the cat outside, Chester had the run of the house, and we said, where's the boy, he's alittle quite, we found him curled up in bed in my spot, taking a nap, lol

Sorry to hijack your thread, OP!!! But I have been considering another dog to keep my Yorkie company (he's 11 months and I no longer work as of three weeks ago) and a Papillion was a dog I had considered. I didn't realize they were hyper! That is the last thing I need with a high energy Yorkie! I think I'm leaning towards sock puppet instead of extra dog...lol

We have a 12yr old cat, 10 year old border collie, to that we added one yorkie, and like you later felt he needed company to play with. He's ok with the cat, they keep clear of each other mostly. As for the border collie, he's so clumsy, I'd never leave him alone with a small dog. He has a lovely nature, but unlike most border collies, he's a klutz.
Once Caleb (yorkie) was 7 mths, we added another yorkie. It certainly did change the dynamics. It is more work, more expense. Caleb is very bonded to me, so I've had to work hard to give them both the time they deserve. To be fair to both, he's so laid back it would be easy to over look him a bit, and she lets you know she feels jealous vocally. Yet his feelings are easily hurt, if he feels I've given her too much attention. Caleb and my routine, had to change, he used to love slowly waking up in the morning, having a massage, then belly rub. If we try to do that now, Pip throws herself next to him and insists on joining in (so I try and do both, at the same time) She wiggles and jumps on Caleb, she has so much energy.Caleb is like Eeyore and Pip is like Tigger.

They are both adorable, but very different in their needs, ie she needs more physical stimulation than him. He needs more mental stimulation than her...yet them both need both.
I'd still do it again. Pip is such a cuddlier and adds to our family. The extra effort is worth it. Pip and Caleb play so well together, which is what we wanted.

There are definitely pros and cons.+

Pretty much what Oddsock said. We brought Zoey after Magnus turned 1 year old. I feel very lucky that Magnus accepted Zoey well. They're not the best of friends, but they do have the pack mentality. So if anything arises, they'll team up.

I have two Yorkies two from the same litter Mike and Zach I think two are great and they have each other when I am not around But I need to tell you that when you put dogs together it changes their behavior and their relationship in the family Dogs are just wired that way Immediately one has to become dominant That might be a smooth or a rough transition When you put them together as pups its always easier
There will be fights .... Even under the best circumstances over toys .... Or bones or biscuits Most of the time they will sort it out on their own but if it gets violent or it happens frequently you will have to intervene. Just like with kids they will each have their own personality One of mine is type A high strung all the way .... My Mike on the other hand is a dogs version of a slacker
I think two is better than one but its more than one dog plus one dog

I love having multiples so in my house 2 at a time has been the minimum, and after having 4 for 5 years, I now have 3. There are some adjustments, but I think it is worth it to have double the fun, and always know they have company if you are not there. I especially love when they play together, if you are lucky enough to get 2 that do.

I got Mike at 2 1/2 months old. and when he was 3 months I couldn't resist and got Molly at 2 months old.... they are 1 month apart in age and they do love each other so much that I feel really glad I made that decision, They are over 9 months old already and I still "awwww" when they are sleeping head to head almost like hugging... I got them separate beds for each, but they would always go to one bed and cuddle together, so I just got one big bed and they are really happy.

So yeah, in short, 2 > than 1 :-P .

You really lucked out with Mike and Molly! You could not have found a better matched pair. They loved each other from the beginning, and are so darn cute. I remember the videos when they were in separate pens, but still tried to be close to each other. Two lil cuties!

We have 4. 2 females and 2 males. There's a lot of teaming up, and i found my younger boy is more apt to play with the baby than he is the older 2. But for the most part, it's no different than having 2.
