YorkieTalk Newbie! | Collapsing Trachea Relief Hello all. My little girl just had her teeth cleaned and her trachea was irritated as a result. Vet Xrays said she has a "collapsing trachea" but not collapsed. I am devastated. Her cough is terrible. Meds have helped control her coughing for about 6 hour spans. She is also on a low dose steroid to decrease inflammation. Has anyone else had this happen? She's going on her 6th day of meds- how much longer until I see improvement? I am up with her almost every 2-3 hours as the steroid makes her urinate frequently. HELP! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about your little baby, poor thing. I can tell you're worried sick too . So, did the cough just start after the surgery then? If so, then my guess would be that the severity and frequency of it would dissipate a bit as the irritation from the intubation heals...?

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Trachea Thanks everyone, Her coughing started after her dental cleaning. Xray's confirmed irritated trachea. Just wondering if anyone else ever experienced this? I am so sleep deprived because I am up every two hours with her. Hoping medicine works soon. |

| Callie has CT but has only had her trachea actually irritated where she had to go on steroids once. We had to do the whole treatment because you can't just stop steroids you have to wean off of them but I think she was only on them for a week and had improvement after four days. Hers was not horrible though. If your worried you could always call your vet and voice your concerns.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Trachea Thanks for the tips, friends! I have been talking to the vet everyday...lol You guys are all so supportive- just so nice not to be alone in this. They upped her steroids and she is responding nicely. Let's hope the next time I post she will be on the mend! |

YT 500 Club Member | It should go away once the irritation goes away. Maybe a week. My question is how old is she? Also why did they have to take an xray for a dental and what is the difference between a collapse trachea and collapsing trachea. Has she ever had a cough before the dental? |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Trachea Hello friends, Callie exhibited no symptoms up until her dental procedure last friday (my husband took her). After her dental procedure she was loopy (of course) and then Saturday night she started hacking. Got worse into Sunday. I got home Sunday night and knew instantly she had to see the vet. We went to the ER Vet and he took X-rays of her body to rule out pneumonia and/or fluid in her lungs. Also, Kennel Cough. Everything looked normal except her trachea which narrowed considerably which he predicted may be the cause of her coughing. She also had no fever. We began the steroids Sunday night, and cough tabs as he couldn't get his hands on Tussegon. I went to my normal vet first thing Monday morning, and my same vet confirmed her trachea got irritated. She confirmed that the steroids should help decrease inflammation. She had Tussegon (I guess it's really hard to get now) and we started that immediately as well. She responded nicely until WED when my normal vet wanted to start weaning her off the steroid. She went right back into the crazy hacking. Now we have her on a VERY low dose of steroid every 12 hours, and Tussegon every 8-12 hours. She takes the Tussegon and steroid with a little ice cream (she's in heaven) so no issues giving her the pills. Side effects: Steroid makes her urinate frequently and eat EVERYTHING! She is the most finicky eater and she now eats everything. She is going to be a plump little girl when this is all over. I have to travel on Tuesday and a relative is coming to stay with her for the night- I am crazy that I have to leave her. I know I sound like a over protective Mommy, but I just love her so much. I am sure you can all relate. Thanks for allowing me to purge and calm my nerves week. My husband was out of town last week and I needed support until I got her coughing under control. I sure hope she continues to progress. Its been a very long 7 days. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Good morning all, Quick update: Callie is doing amazing! The steroids finally started working (after 2 full weeks) and she is almost back to her old self. We are currently decreasing the steroids, and hoping she continues to improve. I cannot thank this site enough for the support and nice emails I received during this episode in our life. Many of you are just as in love with your babies as I am and it was so comforting having you all there to support us. Thank you! |

| Updates? I just had almost the exact same situation. The only difference is my vet didn't go through with the dental cleaning bc my Piper became so distressed when they went to sedate her that she turned blue. Also my Piper makes a honking noise when her anxiety levels are very high....so we knew there was a possibility of this diagnosis. We had a surgical consult today where he suggested medical therapy management with hydrocodone syrup as needed in stressful situations, weight management (she's not overweight but just making sure she doesn't get that way) and yearly monitoring. He said eventually she will have to have surgery but that's something you want to do when they're older....I'm so freaked out and worried how old is your yorkie, did your vet mention future surgeries, and is she feeling better now? |

| Sorry to hear about this. CT is really serious. I've had some sad situations myself and actually have lost two dogs because of this. I hope your little one can get the care it needs and that there will be relief, both for her and yourselves. |

| When they put the dog under to do a procedure they put a tube down the throat for breathing. I hate to mention it but it could be they damaged her trachea when putting the tube in or pulling it out. Using a tube that is too large for her could also do harm. If she did not have problems before this then obviously the procedure had something to do with it. I would get her to another vet and have them do x-rays of that poor darling's trachea. You need to know just what the condition of their trachea is and how much damage was done. This sounds worse than just an "irritation." Some Yorkies do have weak tracheas and owners have to be very careful when handling these dog's throats by never using a collar when walking the dog and by making sure groomers do not use a grooming noose on them. Even handling the neck area during bathing can cause damage to a weak or partially collapsed trachea. I have read that some people who have dogs with these problems have used supplements to help strengthen the trachea tissue. Supplements for joints should have what is needed in them. Using a humidifier would help the inside of the throat to remain moist so there is less irritation and help prevent coughing spells. Getting her to another vet for a good evaluation is your first priority in my opinion. |
