YT 500 Club Member | How Long Can You Dog Hold It In I have a 10 month old and I was told he should only be able to hold it in for 6 hours. I thought it was 1 hour per age. How long can your dog hold it it? I am curious because I think I might not be letting my dog out enough. Thanks |

| My past yorkies at 7 months old were 100% house broken. I was working, gone 9 hours, they held pee & poo. They were walked at 7:30AM, again when I got home at 4:30PM, but the were over 5 lbs. As adults their weights were 10, 13 and 17 lbs. At 7 months old I don't remember what their weights were, but they were not tiny pups.

YT 500 Club Member | my dog is 10 months old but sometimes when i come down stairs in the morning he peed in his bed. I let him out at 10 and get up at 7 so I think 9 hours is too long for him. He is 10 pounds. |

| He doesn't sleep in your bedroom so he can tell you when he needs to go potty?

| Not sure about during the day, but at night Lexi is taken out for her last potty break at about 8:30 and she is fine until I get her up at about 6/6:30. She is only 5 lbs, but she has always been a good sleeper. She started sleeping through the night at 13/14 weeks old. |

YT 500 Club Member | wow that is awsome. He goes out at 10 and I get up at 7 and sometimes he has peed on the couch and sometimes he has not. He does have a pad down in the kitchen and he does go on it sometimes. Sammie is 10 pounds so I would think he could hold it longer than he does but maybe his bladder is not that strong |

| Every dog is different. I don't think it's really weight so much. I've seen some little ones hold it pretty long. Jackson can hold it for 10-12 hours overnight. During the day I generally don't push it past 6 hours.

| For me, it's not about how long they can hold it, it's about how long they should have to hold it. If sleeping, ZoE will usually go all night and not potty until morning. But that doesn't mean I expect her to do that during the day. I've only ever had a yorkie, and has always pad trained, so they've had the option to potty whenever they needed. I personally think every dog should have potty options while owners are gone, whether by pads or doggie doors. IMO its cruel to do otherwise. To expect your dog to hold it, regardless of stomach upset, or how they are feeling day to day, what they drink, etc., just seems wrong. How many owners never utilize a bathroom between leaving home and returning home?

| My pup is 4 months and can hold it for 5 hours in his crate when I'm at work. Now when he's up and about I take him out every hour. I have no idea how to test how long he can go without extending the time between when I take him out. I can't wait until he's housebroken. I'm exhausted from taking him out every single hour lol. Maybe he'll be good in 2 months? I sure hope so. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I do agree it is different with each dog, but for puppies the guidelines we have our sound. Very young puppies - after eating, after waking, after playing, and then one hour per one month of life. That is why pups are so exhausting :-) Adult dogs are different - but I don't like to make a habit of other than for overnight sleeping to let the doggies go beyond 5 hours - Get some-one to come in mid-day and give a walk about and a pee/ poo break if you are out all day working. Sure many can hold it much longer, but I don't think they should always have to. Also as dogs become senior their potty habits might change. Magic now often-times needs to go out at 2 or 3 am for pottying. He lets me know, by gently waking me with his nose.

I do have Toto in a crate with a pad while I'm out of the house bc he's not 100% trained. He doesn't give a crap and will go where ever the hell he wants if I don't take him outside. LOL And if I'm gone for a long time, I leave one of the shower doors open and Uni will go in the shower or tub if she needs to go.

| Marcie is 8 yrs old and 7 lbs. I don't think she can hold it more than 6 hrs. During the night I let her out once. She might have a different time schedule than others. |

Remy sleeps in his kennel at night and can hold his urine for 10+ hrs and he is 2.5 lbs. Eventhough, I have a pee pad in it he will not use it. That's the not going potty where they sleep thing eventhough it's away from his bed. He did pee on it when he was younger but now he won't. He sure does let us know in the morning that he has to go lol.
