| Better to? microchip, tags or both? I thought it wasn't good to have collars on yorkies? Those w/collars are the tags on a harness? We have a harness... Cash gets his third set of shots the 24th... should we get him chipped? I don't think VPI pays for that, I know their sending tags though... hmmm...

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | We microchipped both of my girls as they don't wear anything around the house, so instead of tags we went and had them microchipped in case they ever got out!! We don't like them having anything on when we are not there, as you never know what they can get caught on!!!

| All of mine are chipped and they also have ID on their harness. I am covered both direction. The problem with just having your dog have an ID on is that if the dog is stolen there is no way for you to prove it if the person stealing your dog removes the ID. At least you have a little bit of a chance with the chip also in the dog. One other nasty thing is that if your dog got lost and picked up by animal control and sold to a research company (you don't want to know why) then if he has a chip they will not do research on the animal.

| Loki wears his collar with tags, although I put a harness on him to let him out. We don't have a fence or any way to stop him should he get out. He is housetrained so he goes outside many times a day and there are too many opportunities for him to get off the leash, bolt, etc. We've just decided it's safer for him to wear his collar and tags. He is also microchipped. My concern about leaving it only to microchips is that if a neighbor finds him they will not be able to read the microchip without calling the police, and I don't even know if our small local police dept. has a microchip scanner. A non-dog owner may not even be aware of what a microchip is and would not know to check for one. A tag with our address AND phone number would allow a neighbor to immediately contact us or return him.

| Bouncer is soon to be microchipped and my new baby will be too. But Bouncer has at LEAST 20 collars so there is no way he can have tags on them. He wears a different one everyday dependingon what outift he wears that day. I keep their rabies tag on my key ring so if I ever need proof, it's right there.

| Princess is microchipped, I think it's a great idea to have it done. Check your ASPCA, I just found out last weekend out here they charge $15.00 for it. There was a pet fair at the park. Lot's of really cute furbabies! I took Princess to the vet 2 1/2 years ago the chip was $60.00. We have both the collar & harness, she wears her collar sometimes, but always the harness for walks.

I use both, a collar to hold his ID tag and because it's a really cute collar and a harness for when I need to take him outside or on a walk. I NEVER attach his leash to his collar. It's very easy to hurt your baby doing that. I also plan to have him microchipped sometime in the coming weeks.

| I would think both, just to be really safe. I'm yet to microchip Tigger though. I don't know if it's covered under my pet health plan. hmmm......

| My vet assistant told me the story of her mother's yorkie. She disappeared from her yard. About a week later they were at PetSmart and SAW her dog. They asked the woman if she had recently found or acquired the dog. The woman told them she had had her for a long time. They followed her home and called animal control who scanned the dog and found it was theirs. She sold me, anyway. Mine also wore their tags on cat collars when they were smaller and I was afraid of them being stepped on (they have a little bell, too). Now they wear harnesses to walk or go to the vet and no collars or harnesses at home. They never get out. A collar and leash can hurt/crush their trachea - a common problem with yorkies.
