YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Warning - Xmas Alert - Home Depot Kitten dies after eating/nibbling of *real* Xmas tree that had been sprayed with fake snow. A lady shopped at Home Depot and purchased a real tree that had been sprayed, she was assured it was Pet Friendly..... Well it appears as if it was not. Her kitten died after exposure to this tree. A necropsy is underway right now to determine the COD. How-ever investigation into the ingredients comprising the fake snow yielded the first ingredient as what is found in anti-freeze!! Home Depot has worked with her vet, the supplier, etal to ascertain that the *fake snow* is trulythe COD. Apparently only 300 of these trees were shipped across Canada, but lets get the news out. Please be carefull with your Xmas décor and pets. Hollyberry and mistletoe are deadly to animals. Tinsel is particularly attractive to cats and can be very problematic. Dangling ornaments in paw swipe make wonderfull toys. Don';t leave wrapped Xmas presents under tree that contain food or you suspect contain food. Nuts and Candies in covered bowls - or better still - not left out unattended at all. Also the water container for your tree is Not a good source for your pets to drink from...... Have a safe holiday all.

| Oh no, that is so sad. I feel bad for that lady losing her kitten. As pet friendly as I always try to be, I don't know that I would have ever thought about fake snow on a tree or any other ornament. This is a great reminder. It breaks my heart that there has to be a pet lost before we know the truth about a product.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh wow, how incredibly tragic and sad . Thank you for posting this warning. It makes me wonder if all "flocked" / sprayed Xmas trees are poisonous like this...does anyone know? Scary.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Right now assume so, apparently the manufacturer had to be contacted to supply the list of ingredients comprising this fake snow. The radio talk show host on AM 1010 Newstalk is going to have the vet on this Saturday - they are hopefull that by then the answer about COD is known. He made a good point that as pet owners we pet proof our home 11 months of the year - and then the Holiday Season arrives. New smells and new *things* abound our living rooms windows and doors - no wonder our pets get so interested and excited at this time of year. This was certainly a wake up call for me. You can get complacent with older dogs that are well behaved... So now even if I run up to the store on a quick errand - everyone is crated. Or use a room that has remained pet proof :-)

| Also pointsettias are poisonous too if eaten. How sad and scary. We are lazy and just put up lights on our balcony. Nothing inside.

| Nutmeg is bad for dogs too. I didn't know until I read it last year, we always gave the dogs pumpkin pie. |

I had not heard this. I don't use nutmeg in pumpkin pie, or much else, either, but thank you for mentioning it.

| I am so saddened by this story. Kitties are quite easy to make sick or worse. Regardless of whether the product sprayed on the tree contained ethylene glycol, 'regular' antifreeze that tastes sweet and is known to kill dogs, or propylene glycol, the 'safe' antifreeze now put in human and canine food...to retain moisture, as I understand it, kitties cannot tolerate either chemical. I have had many kitties, so have not put up a tree in many years...too much of a career change picking up baubles every day...LOL. However, and not 'blaming' anyone for this tragic accident, but I most definitely do not trust most 'pet safe' explanations either. My condolences to the kitty's owner...RIP sweet baby kitty.

| [QUOTE=ShowGirlLola;4514534]If you use pumpkin pie spice or canned pumpkin pie, rather than plain pumpkin, it probably has nutmeg in it. I use pumpkin pie spice in my pieOTE] Nope...I use organic pumpkin, evaporate my own organic half and half, and only put cinnamon, ginger, and allspice in my pumpkin pies. My pies are fabulous using my own recipe and spice blend, developed many years ago...LOL. I got way too much nutmeg as a child, so rarely use it. I never use pumpkin or apple pie spices...or most other mixes anyway. It only takes a second to measure a few herbs or spices, and I don't mind the extra work...LOL

My pumpkin pie recipe is from a can of pumpkin pie spice my grandmom bought in the 60's. It's pumpkin, eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and pumpkin pie spice. I would mind the extra work, I make like 12 pies between Thanksgiving and Christmas, my family goes nuts for them. I buy a huge container of it on amazon, so I doubt it would be cheaper anyway. *edit* nvm it's cloves I don't use not allspice. Last edited by ShowGirlLola; 12-17-2014 at 07:45 PM. | |

| So sad to read about this ladies tragedy with her kitten. So glad I have an artifical tree with just my on decorations on it and no fake snow. Nowadays you have to pet proof your house just like you would child proof it. Especially with Roxy my cat and Remy.
