| working mom This may be a really dumb question..but I am getting a yorkie in May. I know dogs are alot of work and I hope to not be working for at least a couple weeks when i get my puppy so I can train it and spend lots of time with it. I am a college student who is graduating in May and I will probably have a full time job halfway into the summer working 8 hour days. I'll probably be living at home and my mom is home in the afternoons, but can working people living on their own manage a yorkie without leaving it too long or it having accidents while I am at work? |

| You can always train your yorkie to use puppypads while you're gone so that he doesn't have as many accidents...But you're really gonna have to dedicate some time to potty training because some are very hard to train.

| I plan on being off work for about a month so I hope in that time I can spend lots of time training my dog, but once i start working 8 hour days, what is the best option to do with my dog. Should I let her roam the house free, keep her in a crate, or how do working people do it? |

| I work 8 hours a day. Luckily I live about 10 minutes away from work, so during my lunch hour I go home to check on Yoshi. What I did is got a 10 dollar baby gate at walmart, then I put that up in the bathroom after clearing out everything in there he can't have (remember the toilet paper. that is always a fun one to find shredded). That way he doesn't have to sit in a crate all day. Also, for the first couple months I put puppy pads down in one corner on the opposite his bed and sprayed a training spray that I got at petsmart (he wouldn't go on the pads before I tried this). He very often missed the pad by a few inches, so expect lots of accidents. Also, mine eventually started shredding the pads for fun. Fun for him. These days he recently taught himself (I didn't do it, I dont think) to hold it while he's in the bathroom, which is AWESOME. This is at 4 months and I believe that is on the earlier side. Yoshi is also not even close to being trained in the rest of the house. I wouldn't let him have free roam, at least without you shadowing him literally almost on top of him all the time. That first month w/out work should be very good for you in starting him off. Hope this helps, good luck. DR almost forgot, start crate training right away. its a great way to teach them to hold their bladders for an hour or 2. and then you take him outside and have him go. good luck

| We keep Tucker in a crate. It's the only time he doesn't go. I swear, he could hold it for 10 hours in the crate (not that we've ever left him there that long) but when I'm home and he's out of it he pees every 10 minutes all over the house! It isn't easy, but it's not impossible. One thing, don't expect to housebreak him/her in a month, that would be extremly unusual.

| That is awesome advice from both of you! Thanks. I will invest in gates and keep the puppy in one room. Do lots of people who live on their own and work during the day have yorkies? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | With all of my other puppies (3)I worked full time. It is definately doable. I put them in our breakfast area that has a sliding glass door and looks out to a preschool. I put a gate across so they had access only to the breakfast area about 10 by 8 area. Also my husband was off 2 different days a week than I was so they were not alone everyday and he gets home at 2:30 and I left at 7:00. With Cali I am out of work and home all day with her which is great. Good luck!

| When I got my first yorkie Chloe I brought her to work with me everyday well then I got Daisy and I brought them both to work with me for a few weeks and then they got to be too much work to have them both here at the same time when I have customers and such. So they both stay at home during the day and they keep each other company, I keep them in my bedroom while we are gone I wouldnt recommend letting them have free roam of the whole house I dont hardly ever do that even when I am home. There is too many things that they seem to get ahold of. Even if you have your whole house "puppy proofed" they will ALWAYS find something to get into!!!!

| I crated Olivia for her first few months. She just started staying in the bathroom a few months ago. I used to put pads in her crate, but she never used them (and this was at 13 weeks!) After shredding one of them, I realized that she didn't need it or plan on using it! In the bathroom, she has food and water, a little bed, and a pee pad. She hasn't used the pad yet, but I still keep it there anyway, and just fold it up next to the toilet each night. I am also able to come home during my lunch, but even if I didn't, I don't think it would bother her much. Granted, she loves having me home, but she sleeps all day so she would probably sleep through the rest of the day if I didn't come home. Like Terri said, don't plan on having her trained in a month. You can probably make some good progress, but some yorkies are still training after their first birthdays! If you haven't already found a breeder, look for one that begins potty pad training her puppies- any help would be wonderful! I would definitely suggest starting with a small space and working up to a bigger space to help aid with the potty training. A small puppy has a lot of room to mess in even if the room is pretty small. If you can just fit a bed or blanket, some food and water and a pad, that's enough room. Good luck! |

| My yorkie is 12 wks old. I got her at 6 wks and she is doing great on the puppy pads. I am going back to work in 5 days (so similar to you I would have had her a little over a month before I start leaving her home). I took the advice of people on here and bought an xpen and I keep her in that when I leave with her puppy pads toys food and water and Ithink she just sleeps. She is doing great on the puppy pads (never as an accident in the house). I give her a treat everytime she goes on the pads and I think that help a lot. I noticed a few days ago that she started going more often on the pads and that sometimes it was just a little dripple and then she would look at me like "wheres my treat" so she knows that she gets a treat for being good. But the best thing is when I leave her home alone in the xpen w/her pads there usually is never any potty on the pads, so I think she trys to hold it even though she knows to go on them.. Hope this helps... I am not looking forward to leaving her home all day when I go back to work.. |

| Miko is 1yr 9mos old, and he has complete free reign of the house. When he was a pup though, we used to keep him in our master bedroom when we were out...We kept his food and water in the bathroom and a pee pad in a corner of our room. When we were home, he always had free reign of the house...While we were potty training him though, we never took our eyes off of him! not for one second. hehe

| I work 8 hours a day, and go workout in the evening. Rocky is crated when I am not home and he has no problem holding. When I first got him I would go home at lunch to take him out and feed him until he got a little old. I do howover go home right after work to let him out before I go to the gym, unless my BF gets home early. |

| Don't worry! I work four 6-hours days a week. I got my 8-week old Yorkie and also was able to spend the first week or so at home with him. Now, that I'm back working, he is confined to the kitchen area with his bed, toys, food, and everything else he needs while I'm gone. I listen and don't hear him whinning when I leave - and he's happy to see me when I get home. So - he doesn't seem to mind being left home alone very much. He does have another dog and a bird in the house (but not in the area that he is confined in)...and I leave a light and the radio on for him. --- As far as potty training - he uses his puppy pad fairly well when he's left in the kitchen. But, unfortunately, it's when I'm home and he's running loose that he isn't so good. But, he's a boy and wears a belly band when he's running around the house - so we don't have much carpet-damage, etc., being done. He is good about going to the bathroom when I take him outside -- and I should take him out more than I do. Also - with his belly band, I know exactly how often he pees - and sometimes it is almost every 15 minutes for an hour or two, and then he'll go several hours and not pee at all. I am sure as he grows, he will be better able to hold it and will be peeing less often. Good luck! Carol Jean |
