Exclamation Dog food recall hits West Coast

This just in: January 10th, 2006

PLEASE READ THIS THROUGH ON THE PET FOOD RECALL.

Diamond Foods Recall Added To :

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul - ALL FORMULAS - has been added to
the Diamond dog food recall. Cosco Kirland Brand. Dog and Cat. Please feel free to crosspost.

Diamond Pet Food Recall
1/4/06 11:53am ET - Update From AnimalHelp:

Despite claims that the brands below are the only brands affected, We have received
feedback from pet owners who have recently fed both Cosco "Kirkland" brand pet foods
and Chicken Soup Brand Dog Food, whose pets have exhibited the same symptoms as
noted with Diamond Brands and the aflatoxin contamination.

**Please be aware that while these animals had all the same symptoms of aflatoxin illness
the test results have not been completed yet and it will be a short time before we know for
sure whether their deaths were caused by the food. There are other illnesses and diseases
that cause liver failure and may be to blame. But because the foods these animals were
eating are all made by Diamond, and the symptoms are the same, we want to warn you to
be on the lookout for similar illness in your animals until we know for sure.

Sadly, a 2 year old Skye Terrier died Monday January 2nd, 2006. He was eating Chicken
Soup brand food and displayed the symptoms of aflatoxin illness before he died. The
other dogs in this household are also sick. Liver profiles, toxicology screenings and
pathology results are pending.

Also, a cat death has occured on Tuesday January 3rd, 2006 in SC. This cat was eating
Cosco brand cat food and displayed the
symptoms of aflatoxin illness. Pathology results are pending on this cat. We know of one
other cat who almost died from the same symptoms of aflatoxin illness and also was being
fed Cosco brand cat food.

Cosco's Kirkland Brand pet foods are made by Schell & Kampeter, who also make the
Diamond Products. Chicken Soup is considered one of their super premium food, and they
also make Nutra Nuggets. Cosco Kirkland is made at one or more of the Diamond plants.

If you feed your pet Cosco brands - or ANY other pet food brands (it is possible that other
store brands are made at Diamond plants) - and see illness and symptoms as mentioned
here, we urge you to get your pet to your veterinarian immediately for a liver profile.

We expect the Chicken Soup brands and the Cosco brands will be added to the official
recall very soon if the test results from these two recent deaths provide proof that cause of
death resulted from ingestion of aflatoxin in the food. We will keep you up to date if any
changes are announced.

Because of testing conducted by officials in North Carolina, Diamond Pet Foods has added
Diamond Professional for Adult Dogs to the list of recalled products manufactured in our
Gaston, S.C. facility and distributed in the eastern U.S.

The product, Diamond Professional for Adult Dogs, contains a "Best By" date of January 29,
2007.

We wanted to update you on the recent pet food contamination issue that is believed to have caused the deaths of at least 76 dogs so far, as reported by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Diamond Pet Food has removed its dog and cat food from sale after a dangerous toxin was found in a product manufactured at the company's facility in Gaston, South Carolina. States serviced by the Gaston facility include Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky (eastern), Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virgina, Vermont and Virginia.

To get more information about the cause of illness and symptoms to watch for, please see the FDA statement at http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2005/NEW01290.html

Default How long....

Does anybody know how long it takes to start showing signs of this illness? I am feeding both my dogs Chicken Soup that was bought I think in September. I do not have the bags because I bought the large bags and put it in a plastic container. Neither of my dogs show any signs of illness and I still have a lot of the food left. Any suggestions?

I just went to the Diamond Pet Foods website and found this posted this morning:

Quote:
01/11/2006
Contaminated Diamond Pet Food Products and "Best By" Dates Narrowed
META, Mo. – Jan. 11, 2006 – Based on analytical sampling of finished product lots retained by Diamond Pet Foods, the company has been able to narrow products and "Best By" dates affected by aflatoxin.

Testing of more than 2,700 finished product samples conducted by independent laboratories confirms that only Diamond Maintenance Dog and Diamond Premium Adult Dog with "Best By" dates of April 3, April 4, April 5, and April 11, 2007, are potentially toxic. These products also will have a capital "G" (in reference to the company's Gaston, S.C., facility) in the 11th or 12th position of the date code (18 lb. to 55 lb. bags). The capital "G" will be in the 9th position on smaller 4 lb. to 8 lb. bags.

Test results for all other products have not been toxic.

As a proactive precautionary measure, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul and Premium Edge brands have been tested and are negative for aflatoxin. It is important for consumers to note that Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul and Premium Edge brands are not included in the product recall.
"This testing will help our customers better identify products affected," said Mark Brinkmann, chief operations officer, Diamond Pet Foods.

Is there something anywhere else with a link for members to check that would prove this wrong?

PLEASE do be safe. IMHO you should do the safe thing for your animals uh pets and throw the food out. If you do not have the bag containing the lot number or dates number I would not take a chance if it were my dogs. This toxin is lethal! It takes several days for the toxin to damage the liver...by then it is usually too late to save the dog. I'm not meaning to scare you just to ask you err on the side of caution.
The Univ of PA or Cornell (not sure which one) has developed a blood test for this toxin within the last couple of weeks. If anyone has a sick animal it might be prudent to ask your vet about this test.
Oh and let me tell ya.....way more than 76 dogs have died. Notice they said dogs turned into the FDA. There are scores of clinics in several states who have been fighting to save animals who have eaten this food over the last month. It is not pretty.

Good question. Mine have been on the Diamond Lamb & Rice since October...it's just now hit the West Coast where before I do not think they were on the list.

If I remember correctly...or maybe I just heard, that effects were noticed immediately...but don't quote me on that.

I definintly agree about erring on the side of caution, and had I known that Chicken Soup was made at the same plant, I would have thrown it out immediately when the recall was made. I guess the reason I am questioning it is since I am just finding out that some Chicken Soup may be affected, but mine have been eating out of the same bag for 3 1/2 months, I wouldn't think it would be possible for my food to be contaminated. I will call the vet and report back on what she says. I would never knowingly endanger our pets. We thought we were losing our 13 yr old Patch a few weeks ago, and my family was very upset. It turned out to be an infection from a bite (what from we don't know) and was treatable, he is now fine, but I never saw a dog get so sick so fast and when we took him to the ER, I never thought we would be bringing him home!

I just called my vet, but they are closed this afternoon. I will feed them something different tonight and call her tomorrow morning. I will let you know what she says.

I thought I had read, but cannot find now, that the effects were noticed quickly.

I am so sorry, I had heard this too and I am glad I did with enough time, I was about to orde Chicken Soup and when I read the first recall I thought twice, better safe than sorry.... I decided on Innova, they have been in business since 1989 so I think the test of time shows their good food line and success. And it helps that both of mine LOVE IT!

JMO~ For such an easy solution to NOT feed any type of Diamond food,, I would not use it.. it's a very easy solution,I'd rather be safe than sorry. Given the option..slim to no chance it could be be affected... I'd opt to not risk it at all, with so many other options out there. Until it is a for sure, no risk at all.
But that's just me.
