| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | In looking back I think I mis-read Oct for Ont... Shows you what quick scan reading does ![]() But I think Tennessee is about 12 hours from me - although gawd knows and Maximo too I am geographically challenged. And there are many reputable breeders in Ontario beside Rigair, Durrer Yorkies, Oz Yorkshire Terriers, Vicklyn, etc etc. But mainly they are grouped in roughly Southern Ontario - at least the ones I know are.

| "A leash should never be hooked to a small dogs collar ever." I meant harness. Something for temp. relief of Hypoglycemia....put a table spoon of honey very thinned down with water between pups cheek and gum. Gently hold mouth shut until swallowed. This can be done if pups unconscious, if done with great care, if you have no other alternative. Its worked for me at the direction of my vet before. |

| Oh gee. . . I just read about the new rule change. I was under the impression that I would have to fill out a waiver of some sort and agree to quarantine the pup at my home until it got vaccinated. I will talk to the person I'm getting the pup from and see if she will keep it another eight weeks. Thanks for the info. I'm glad I joined this forum. Just wish I had found it a week ago! |

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | That is an option the quarantine option; but make sure you don't have to set up the paperwork with the border first. I can't remember off the top of my head what the quarantine rules are

The best thing, especially because the dog is too young to come home on a trip like that anyway, is to let the pup stay with the breeder. I just can't understand how the breeder is unaware?

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Me neither Lynzy worrisome, but hey the OP knew a little about *quarantine* and it is not a slam dunk. Hope she puts the brakes on, and there is much more to this story.... I will share in Yorkie Showing as it has more to do with we frequent travellers to the States who show dogs, and is not germane to this discussion!

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Actually there is : See below. But it surely reads it should be set up before hand. They meet the criteria specified in the Issuance and Enforcement Guidance for Dog Confinement Agreements. Importing a puppy purchased outside of the United States does not meet the criteria for a confinement agreement. Importers are expected to exhaust all other reasonable options for delaying the importation of dogs until they are fully vaccinated against rabies before being considered for a confinement agreement. Unvaccinated dogs that arrive in the United States from countries that are not considered rabies-free may be denied entry to the United States and returned to the country of origin at the importer’s expense. Questions about importing unvaccinated dogs may be directed to CDC at CDCAnimalImports@cdc.gov. New! Issuance and Enforcement Guidance for Dog Confinement Agreements On July 10, 2014, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted guidance on the Issuance and Enforcement Guidance for Dog Confinement Agreements. This guidance describes the factors that HHS/CDC will consider in deciding whether to issue a dog confinement agreement or deny entry of a dog being imported into the United States that has not been adequately vaccinated against rabies. Dog confinement agreements are covered under 42 CFR 71.51. This guidance became effective on August 11, 2014 (30 days after publication). New! Frequently Asked Questions about the Federal Register Notice, Issuance and Enforcement Guidance for Dog Confinement Agreements » More Importation of Dogs from Rabies-free Countries Unvaccinated dogs may be imported without proof of rabies vaccination if they have lived in a country that is considered free of rabies for a minimum of 6 months or since birth. Following importation, all dogs are subject to state and local vaccination or health certificate requirements. All pet dogs arriving in the state of Hawaiihttp://www.cdc.gov/TemplatePackage/images/icon_out.png and the territory of Guamhttp://www.cdc.gov/TemplatePackage/images/icon_out.png, even from the U.S. mainland, are subject to locally imposed quarantine requirements. Additional information can be found in the Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control http://www.cdc.gov/TemplatePackage/images/icon_pdf.gif [PDF - 20 pages]. Importation of Dogs from Countries Where Screwworm is Present The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS), requires that dogs that are being imported from countries or regions where screwworm is known to existhttp://www.cdc.gov/TemplatePackage/images/icon_out.png meet the following requirements: The dog must be accompanied by a certificate signed by a full-time salaried veterinary official of the region of origin stating that the dog has been inspected for screwworm within 5 days before shipment to the United States. The certificate must state that the dog is either free from screwworm or was found to be infested with screwworm and was held in quarantine and treated until free from screwworm before leaving the region. Please refer to the USDA APHIS websitehttp://www.cdc.gov/TemplatePackage/images/icon_out.png for further information. The rules for bringing domestic dogs into the United States are covered under U.S. regulation 42 CFR 71.51http://www.cdc.gov/TemplatePackage/images/icon_out.png. Puppies must not be vaccinated against rabies before 3 months of age, so the youngest that a puppy can be imported into the United States is 4 months Issuance and Enforcement Guidance for Dog Confinement Agreements Frequently Asked Questions on the Dog Confinement Agreement Notice » Globally, canine rabies viruses are responsible for the vast majority of the estimated 55,000 human rabies deaths worldwide each year. These rabies viruses remain a serious public health threat in many countries where rabies surveillance and vaccination programs are not strong. To protect public health within the United States, all people who bring dogs to the United States must make sure that their dogs are adequately vaccinated against rabies before arrival. Importers who are unable to provide a valid rabies vaccination certificate upon arrival in the United States should contact CDC at CDCAnimalImports@cdc.gov as soon as possible in advance of the dogs’ planned arrival. Confinement agreements may be approved on a limited and case-by-case basis. Dogs that are not adequately vaccinated might be denied entry to the United States and returned to the country of origin at their owners’ expense. Since 1956, federal quarantine regulations, under 42 CFR 71.51, have controlled the entry of dogs into the United States because of the risk for importing rabies and other diseases that can infect people. Today, preventing the entry of dogs infected with canine rabies or other diseases that can infect people in the United States continues to be a public health priority. This guidance describes the factors that HHS/CDC will consider in deciding whether to approve a dog confinement agreement or deny entry of a dog being imported into the United States that has not been adequately vaccinated against rabies. This guidance becomes effective on August 11, 2014 (30 days after publication). | You yt people never cease to amaze me with your caring responses. Thankful that our OP found this group and was able to learn this information before making that long trip. Also thankful that sweet little puppy will have no choice but to stay with the breeder until at least 12 weeks. I know the emotional connections we can make to dogs and puppies based on their pictures when we are freshly grieving the loss of our beloved babies. I have done it myself. Even though I completely understand and empathize I hope you will do everything in your power to thoroughly research this breeder as it is my understanding that the best quality breeders would never let a puppy go until 12 weeks. And in the end, isn't that what we all want? The best for our new babies who will become a part of our family. |
