| Newbie here with question re: reputable breeder..apologize if I'm in the wrong place! Hello all. Just joined this great group this evening! I am not sure where to post a message regarding reputable places to find a forever friend.... I've been visiting this site for a while and finding such great info! I grew up with Yorkies in the 60's and 70's....we always had a "baby"and a large dog of some kind too, and it always amazed me how the Yorkie was consistently the one "in charge". I have two grown children and two boys, twins who are 12, and everyone is self sufficient enough at last that I can welcome another Yorkie to love and have as my companion! We have a fat cat named Tucker and an elderly Golden Retriever named Gracie. We lost Gracie's littermate and sister earlier this summer to cancer. We live in Austin TX. I am mortally terrified of doing business with an unscrupulous breeder. I have not consulted my vet yet, (just moving forward with this idea this past week or so), but I thought you guys might be able to point me in the right direction. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! |

| Welcome to YT!! Definitely look into YTCA.org, but also check under the breeder section here on YorkieTalk. There's countless threads of good & bad breeders from all over the country. You'll learn a lot about what and who to look out for! Glad you're doing your research and I hope you find the perfect pup for your family

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I too recommend the YTCA, when I first came to Yorkietalk, I had no idea on how to find a dog. Someone mentioned the Yorkshire Terrier club of America and I'm so glad that they did. It's the mother club of the Yorkie and breeders who belong must be breeding for several years and promise to abide by certain ethical standards. Of course, not every breeder who belongs is great, but you can find some great ones who belong I recommend it because they have members in nearly every state and most people can visit the home in person. This is extremely important, otherwise, you don't know how the breeding pair are being kept. While Yorkietalk also has some good breeders, anyone can join Yorkietalk and some breeders join just to sell dogs. Yorkietalk has in the past had members who were horrific breeders, so please be careful if you go that route. Some people will recommend a breeder even though there own dog is still just a pup and they have no way of knowing if it's healthy yet. Best of luck! In the library we have several guides on how to choose a breeder. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...e-breeder.html The link in my signature takes you to a breeder referral for the YTCA.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Sorry, but the AKC will advertise any breeder who coughs up the money, this is not enough of an endorsement. There are puppymills who still belong to the AKC and the AKC can't kick them out if they are following state laws.

There are puppy mills and backyard breeders everywhere it's your job to get to know your breeder and recognize red flags just as it is with any other place you look.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Absolutely, I'm just saying that an AKC ad is no different than an ad in the local paper.

| I'm with Nancy in that AKC will sell an ad to anyone who's registering a litter. YTCA was once the gold standard but has lost members and prestige in recent years because of their own infighting. It's still a good place to start a search, but be careful not to fall prey to some members whose only interest in the club is the higher price their directory listing can command for them. Proceed slowly, communicate with breeders, establish rapport, check references and reconcile their standards to your expectations.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Guess I said one thing and opened a can of worms... wish I could delete my response for this topic. Everyone doesn't need to jump at what I said. To the OP I apologize for giving you any misleading or wrong info I'm by no means an expert just giving my OP IN I ON from what I've been told by other posters. I hope you find your pup
