| Scratches what she wants If Lola wants food or water she scratches her bowls. If a door is shut she scratches it. She scratches if wants something off a table, or if she wants on the furniture and something is blocking her way. This is her primary way of telling me what she wants, if I ignore the scratching she'll progress to growling and then barking. If she wants something that isn't easy to communicate with scratching (ex. play time) she'll go straight to the growling and barking. Lola isn't much of a barker, if she gets to that point it's like she's yelling. She's never growled in an aggressive way, that's just how she talks. I love the way she communicates, it's a lot easier on my ears than barking and I usually know exactly what she wants, but I've never had a dog do this before. My other dogs would dance around and bark when they wanted something. The only dog that does something similar is my cousin's dog scratches the treat cabinet, but that's the only time she does it. Does anyone else have a dog that scratches or growls to communicate? |

| I'm fascinated with the way dogs learn to communicate. Max and Teddy will gently paw at us to get our attention when we are sitting in chairs. Their primary means of asking for something is performing sits and staring at us. Then we have to play 20 questions to find out what they want. Max stands up and Teddy turns in a circle when we ask the right question. If Max can't get our attention, he will try to talk. He is pretty funny with the sounds he comes up with and we have learned what each one means. The only time he barks for something is when we are upstairs or outdoors.

YT Addict | My yorky is new to the family but is already communicating. Lickiing my face to go outside. But a while ago he and my papilon wanted in the kitchen for water and hhe licked me which is a new one. Strange its like he was doing my paps bidding but just walked by her. Then if water is low they pick up the bowl water left and all and bring it to us. |

| Scratching seems very polite!!! My Teddy circles if he needs his box so I have to jump up and check that the door to the room where its kept is open - otherwise...!!! He also runs around and chews his toys whenever he wants something, which is confusing for me, because he's always chewing his toys...is he asking for something or playing? Who knows! He does carry his bowls, though, when he wants them filled. He carries his water bowl to the bathroom and drops it at the door for me to fill. He carries his food bowl to his crate and waits for it to be fetched and filled....lol. While waiting, though, he kills a toy...haha. Dogs are fascinating! |

| When Gizmo wants a toy that he can't reach he starts with a low growl and we say "show me" and he will turn to where the toy is and back to us. When he wants to play, he'll bring his toy, drop and do the low growl. If we don't listen then it's a low bark. So cute!!!! |

| I love it when they try to communicate by looking @ you, then looking @ what they want....like they're saying, 'hey, I want that, yeah that!' Quote:
