Want Toy Yorkie in Colorado

My wife and I had Daisy for 6 years. She was astounding. Last December she was stolen early in the morning and we haven't seen her since. We now would like to replace her. We live in the country and are interested in a larger Yorkie like a Toy, 8 to 10 pounds, or even up to 12 pounds, which Daisy weighed. We haven't had any luck finding larger Yorkies. The available ones are mostly Teacup size. Any breeders in or near Colorado that have pups larger than Teacups?
She bred Miniature Schnauzers for 20 years back in the 70's and 80's. She is interested in breeding Yorkies so would not consider spayed or neutered pups.

I'm so sorry daisy got stolen. Breeding and getting a pet are very different. First off yorkies are considered in the toy category, there is no such thing as a teacup it is a word bad breeders made up and reputable breeders don't want to be associated with that. Breeding is a very serious thing especially to us on this board because we love the breed so much. Breeding should be done to better the breed so just any yorkies together is not good. If you want to breed yorkies you will need to earn the trust of a yorkie breeder who works very hard for there lines and that dosent just give breeding rights to anyone. You also need to make sure to do all health and genetic test available that is not just done by your regular vet. You also need to make sure the dogs your breeding are perfect examples of the breed and one of those is to make sure your breeders don't exceed 7 pounds but your female should not be less then 5 pounds. If your just interested in a pet you could check out the ytca.org for breeders but you should also check them out if you want to breed yorkies to because they are the mother club of yorkies.

I'm so terribly sorry your little girl was stolen. My gosh, I don't know how I'd ever recover from a loss like that...it's really sad and tragic and wrong. I'm so sorry.

As far as some things you mentioned above. Just to let ya know - the yorkie is a Toy Breed, and the "standard" for the breed is that they be 7 pounds or less. If they weigh more than that, they may still be a yorkie, but would not be considered "standard" and it may possibly mean that they were carelessly bred by an unethical breeder (ie, if the breeder knew she would be breeding too-large, out-of-standard yorkies). There is no such thing as a "teacup yorkie" -- that's just a marketing term used by unethical people who are trying to get you to pay more for a "teacup yorkie". It's a term that has done a lot of damage to the breed as it's dishonest and misleading and incorrect .

All that said, many people here have larger yorkies - so I know they're out there...it just depends upon whether you want a standard yorkie or are comfortable purchasing a non-standard.

Some reputable breeders end up having larger unexpected yorkies. We have a few here that came from reputable breeders but are larger I think.

Thank you both for responding. We knew little about the breed when we purchased Daisy from a private breeder here in Colorado. We live in the country and have an invisible fence. She would go outside with me and walk down the driveway to get the newspaper and would transform into a lion to protect me as we walked. She had such spirit.
In seeking to replace her I researched the breed and found the AKC standards to be quite limited since she weighed 12 pounds, but that is the purpose of AKC registration, that is, limits. No problem, but there is a lot of confusion regarding standards. We would like a pet that isn't restrained by the AKC standards, but is still a Yorkie in spirit. By the way, Daisy was registered with America's Pet Registry, Inc.
Any ideas?

Well in the US the only registry that is reputable is the AKC all the others are not and some you can even register a table with. Reputable breeders in the US will only use the AKC. If your wanting to breed the dog being AKC registered is pretty important. If breeding is not important and pure breed is not important you might want to look at some yorkie rescues and local shelters.

Have you considered a Silky Terrier? They are a similar breed to a Yorkie but more in the size range for what you are wanting.

Did you see the Yorkies for re-homing in Washington. Jump on a plane and go see those beautiful dogs. I would certainly go if my husband said no more dogs. I have two Yorkies , I just love them. These are so cute and the love of a dog is worth the travel. Hope you find what you want.

I know of a yorkie shelter in Colorado that maybe has a few larger sized yorkies. I agree the silky is more of the size I think your looking for, especially if you plan to breed it. I bet there will be other people who can help you and give you great advice.

It called, rocky mountain yorkie rescue.I don't know much about it, so you will have to go to the website. I've never adopted from there, but it really looks like a place that cares about the breed.
