I'll let my sister know that tongue-grabbing is NOT a good technique to stop licking. Thanks for the input, everyone! I kind of figured out that it was a bad idea when my sister called Bella's name, and Bella would not come to her. Fortunately, my sister has continued on her travels, and Bella is back to her normal, playful, licky self .

My dad has done that before to my parents dogs and all it did was tick my mom off and start a fight. It's mean and I would not allow that to happen to my dog there is no need for it.

My daughter was married to a guy who had a 2 year old. To keep him from cussing (the 2 year old) his mom would put Tabasco on his tongue.

I wanted to beat the crap out of her when I found this out. Especially because he was merely repeating the words he heard his mommy say.

I also wouldn't bite a child to teach him/her not to bite. It's mean.
I didn't hit my kids to teach them not to hit either.

It's unanimous, then, NO tongue grabbing. I've been googling, and I haven't found any legitimate veterinary behaviorist who recommends grabbing the tongue to stop licking. I've seen it mentioned on various online dog forums, but when someone brings it up, it is almost universally condemned. I feel bad for allowing my sister to do it in the first place, but she is normally a very intelligent person, and I thought she had a good reason to think it was a legitimate practice. When I saw that all it did was make Bella avoid my sister, I knew it was a bad idea. Bella has made a full recovery, and if my sister ever visits again, I will tell her that it is NOT allowed. Bella is a very forgiving dog, and I think that she will forget it ever happened.

Yeah, I know . My sister is a very good intensive care nurse, but a very bad dog behaviorist. Just because someone is at the top of their profession in one field doesn't mean that they are good in all fields. Lesson learned.

So many people have such weird concepts about dog training! The first time someone grabbed my dog's tongue would be the last!

Gracie also likes to lick. She knows that she gets three or four licks with me and then that is enough and that is what I tell her, "that is enough." She knows to stop. I find it strange that people don't just teach their pets the word "no" or "no more." Dogs can understand such words if the owner is consistent.

If someone comes to the house that does not know to tell Gracie "no" then I just tell them that they need to tell her "that is enough." When they say it she stops. Much less painful than having the tongue pulled.

On one hand...licking obsessively IS a bad habit for any dog.

On the other...I would not be a happy camper if someone took it upon themselves to discipline my dog in any way. That's just rude.

Galen is a kisser. . . . I even have one kitty that is one too. He actually talks to me a lot too. I almost lost Guildenstern. He can do it anytime he wants. And I would not have it any other way. Tell her If she doesn't like YOUR dog licking her then move her hand . . .
