My sister grabbed Bella's tongue!!!
 
No, my sister is not a toddler, LOL! She is a retired nurse, and she visited my partner and I yesterday and met Bella for the first time. Bella is a very licky dog, and when she tried to lick my sister's hand, she said that's a bad habit, and told me that if you grab her tongue when she starts licking, Bella will learn to stop licking. So my sister grabbed Bella's tongue repeatedly, and Bella stopped licking her. Of course, Bella didn't want to come anywhere near my sister after that, LOL! So my question to the group is, is this a good way to teach a dog to stop licking, or is my sister just being a mean old bully?

Anything physical other than removing a dog gently from situation or an emergency (which is different) is just stupid. How would she like if I grabbed her tongue? Tell her not to touch the dog, period.

Mean bully....Buster will lick the skin off of my face and hands if I let him but I would never grab his tongue to try to stop him. If he's licking my face, I put him down or move, same if he's licking my hand. No tongue grabbing!

Ouch! Remind me to grab my sister's tongue the next time she visits :D. In the meantime, I'm going to check around the internet to see if anyone else has heard of this technique. Like I said, I don't think it stopped the licking. Bella just gave my sister the side-eye and stayed away from her.

I have a licker too but no way would I grab his tongue or let anyone else do it.I don't care for to much licking so I say no lick and he will stop. Now your dog is afraid of your sister would you like him to be afraid of you too? Just say stop.

iyiyi, lol, if someone was grabbing at me, I sure would keep my distance, I don't think grabbing her tongue is a training technique. I had 3 girls that would lick, I taught them the command word "no licking" and they would stop. Sister I would have to say is a bully.

I just let Bella lick me to her heart's content. Mainly on the hands, though, and only occasionally will I pick her up and let her lick my face. If I want a real treat, though, I'll lay down and let her lick my face and bald scalp all over. Bella is happy, and it feels like a spa treatment :).

I agree. Bella likes to lick my partner too, but he doesn't like being licked. He just says "stop" and pulls his hand away, and she stops. Bella still loves him. I'm not sure Bella likes my sister any more, though.

My boys are 'kissers' and I wouldn't have it any other way. When I don't want them to lick (when I am grooming their faces, or they start licking things they shouldn't), I give them the command "no licky licky." They stop immediately.

Grabbing the tongue is rotten, potentially counterproductive, and dangerous.

I have a (birth) sister who's tongue I'd like to grab when she opens their mouths. :p <------ oh wait I better not stick mine out or it might get grabbed :eek:

I've never heard of anyone grabbing a dog's tongue as a training technique to stop licking.

I have lickers and it doesn't bother me but my DH hates it. He just removes himself from the situation. I see licking as a sign of love and affection but also know there are other reasons a dog will lick. No tongue grabbing here!
Tell your sister we are talking about her!!!

If one of my sister's did that to any of my girl's, they would certainly loose thier hand, as I would knock it her off. LOL
