| Will the groomer............? Will the groomer express TJ's anal glands if I don't tell her to? I think that he needs them done, but I'm afraid I'm going to forget to tell her to do it. Will she just automatically do it without me asking her to? |

| Usually they tell you what comes with the grooming package and they should go over everything with you before they start and have you sign something. If you think you might forget to ask, write yourself a note maybe?

| I think it depends. The mobile grooming company I worked at had a card the customer would fill out and mark if they need their anal glands expressed. If it didnt say that, we didnt do it. So it wasnt an automatic thing. I would try to remember to ask, possibly even call beforehand so you dont forget.

| I believe My groomer does it as basic grooming procedure. they do it during bath time so it doesn't get on their coat. this way when they are by their bums they don't have any dingle berries to worry about and know everythings clear. |

| I would be sure to mention it just in case. My mom has cockers and about a week after they got groomed they would stink really bad again. I finally said something. So the next time she took them they told her that it was because no one was doing the glands.... oh brother!!! for an average of $50 for grooming you'd think they'd include it. |

| Grooming Anal glands expressed should be part of the grooming package and I always do them/check them when grooming. I have my own mobile business. However, I do not do them if the dog has an anal gland problem that requires a Vet to do them and the owner will tell me if that is the case. I also cannot do them if there is an impaction problem but will tell the owner that there is a problem and to take the dog to the Vet. Groomers are not allowed to express them internally, i can only do them externally. If they cannot be expressed externally and I know they need doing, I will tell the owner. |

| Is this something that should be done to every dog at every grooming?? Do they just check and if it needs to be done, do it? Do some groomers do it every time regardless? I thought that it should only be done if it's necessary, and not every dog always needs to have this done. My groomer didn't say whether they did it or not when I took Pixie, but I think they did. She was dragging her bum on the carpet for a day or two after she was groomed (and she had NEVER done this prior to that). I have a feeling that they did it and irritated her a bit. |

| Grooming Small and medium breed of dogs should be checked at every grooming. Large breeds usually don't have a problem and don't need them expressed but when I used to groom larger breeds, I would ask the owner if they do have a problem. Maybe it would help if the purpose for the anal gland was explained if you didn't already know. There are two little glands just on the inside of the rectum that empty into the colon. In defecating, the dog (and cat) gland will release a bit of this stuff in the gland that coats the stool. The contents of the gland will contribute to scent or mark territory. When dogs were bred down into smaller and smaller sizes, the little outlet for the gland got smaller. Some dogs have trouble with this and the gland does not empty on its own. Some have to have the gland removed because of chronic infections, impaction problems or if the gland is tilted the wrong direction it will be hard to express at any time. A little more fiber in the diet will often bulk up the stool and the gland will be more likely to empty on its own. Your dog scooting on the rug will usually indicate a gland problem. After grooming and gland expression sometimes they are a little irritated at the rectum but more often than not the irritation is from clipping the anal area with clippers. I don't use clippers to trim the hair around the rectum, I prefer scissors, less irritation and risk of clipper burn. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | If I were you - I would WRITE DOWN exactly what you want done ...Go over it with them before you leave your baby ...and leave your instructions with there when you go - this way you can discuss it up front...and if there's something they won't do or you don't trust them to do - you can always back out....many groomers don't do that as standard practice and to tell you the truth - I wouldn't want a groomer doing that to either of my girls - I'd rather have the vet do it. |

| What age? Do five month old puppies need this done? I thought it was just for older dogs. |

I am not sure if he needs them expressed. He doesnt scoot around on the carpet or anything but sometimes he'll lick and bite his butt (almost as if he's biting a flea but he doesnt have fleas) and then his butt smells really really bad. Is it his anal glands needing expressing or might it be something else? | |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I'm not an expert but that sure is what it sounds like - My cocker had to have it done and somehow I just don't see groomers doing this as part of their services - I did have my vet do it for her and it wasn't pretty ! Matter of fact...it ran me out of the room in seconds lol One wiff of the air and I was back in the waiting room |
