| Brushing Dogs Teeth Can someone please tell me how to get my dogs teeth brushed? She fights me so bad I cannot do it. I don't want her to have bad teeth so I even tried the teeth wipes that you wrap around your finger and I cannot keep her still enough to do the job. She is so small that I don't want to hurt her. |

| Mine all love getting their teeth brushed...but I've been brushing them since they were puppies. She'll get used to it, how old is she? Sometimes dogs do not like getting their mouth touched/ teeth brushed if they have a bad tooth...

| Just remember; I know they can seem strong, but they ARE *a lot* smaller than you. You can handle it. But what I did to get Jackson used to brushing (he hates it too), was I initially trained him to come into the bathroom with me every night. No tooth brushes, paste, etc. Just .. you get a treat for coming into the bathroom. After a few days of that, I started bringing the brush and paste in. I would let him sniff it, put it on the ground, and put the treats around the brush so he would associate it with positive things. After a week of that, I began lifting his lip up, clicking and treating. No brushing yet at this point. After another week, we began the brushing part. So it took about 2 weeks of de-sensitizing and then he just became used to it and it became routine. We use CET beef or vanilla mint flavored. He tolerates it more than any other flavors.

| Lilah enjoys her tooth brushing too but I admit I have to work hard to brush all over while she tries to lick up her toothpaste. It is enzyme based and my understanding is that the contact with the tooth itself is theoretically all that is needed but I feel that the brushing is very beneficial as well for obvious reasons. Having regular chews available helps to break up plaque and reduce tartar as well. I like the long handled toothbrushes- shoving a cloth in lilah's mouth did not work for us either, lol. Jenny at topline pet (mimomimo above poster) sells two packs of dog toothbrushes for 2$ And with a tasty paste I bet tooth brushing could become a treat your pup can't resist!

| I think a key word here might be consistency. Calleigh doesn't like her teeth brushed. It is something she has to deal with. She doesn't thrash around, but she won't sit down either. Just keep trying and let her know you are the boss. This may sound silly, but I let her watch me brush my teeth. She knows lot of words, so I think she understands. I also tell her the doctor will have to brush. She knows about the vet. Lol! She's had her teeth cleaned there several times before.

| Does she have any retained baby teeth? Sometimes if their teeth (or gums) hurts they put up such a fight. It might get better after she has any retained baby teeth pulled while being spayed (if she hasn't already). If she's already had them removed, my vet suggested starting w/a gauze wrapped in your finger, put some yummy doggie toothpaste on it & rub it around her mouth. Do little @ a time, don't give her a chance to act out. If she starts freaking out, let her go & try again a few minutes later. Always praise & give bunches of kisses when finished. She'll get used it, don't give up...could be that she doesn't like the taste of those dental wipes(?), my guys used to freak out @ 1st, but I told them that they can't win. GL!
