| Spay My Yorkie? Hello everyone, I have a 1 year old Yorkie, she has her period, this is her second period and I'm thinking about getting her spay but I'm a little worried because a friend of mine had a Yorkie who died on the table. What do you guys think? How safe is it?

| I think as long as your pup is healthy enough to handle the surgery and you have a good, skilled vet, you'll be fine. Be sure the vet has experience with smaller dogs (how big is your Yorkie?) and only uses either Isoflourine or Sevoflourine to sedate them (Some types of anesthesia can kill small dogs. These two are the safest. My vet uses Sevo). A LOT of dogs are spayed/neutered each year with no complications whatsoever. Although death is a possible risk... it's a risk for anything that requires the animal be anesthetized (whether it be for surgery or a routine dental cleaning), and it's my understanding that it only happens a very small percentage of the time. My yorkie goes in next week to be spayed, and though I'm nervous about it, I trust my vet and know she'll be just fine. I would consider the pros and cons of neutering your dog and talk to your vet before you decide whether to have her spayed or leaver her intact.... |

| PrencessDior-yes, as with any surgical procedure, regardless of severity, you run the risk of your pooch experiencing complications. There are both positive and negative aspects to both spaying and not spaying. There is plenty of info on the site if you do a search. You will find ample suggestions of the pros and cons and the different type surgeries available. I urge you to research, weigh the options, and decide which would be the better road for YOU in YOUR situation. People here can give you their opinions and you can gather useful information to help w/ your decision, but in the end, you are the YOU are the only one who's content with the situation should be of importance. I guess what I am saying is, learn what you can, ask questions when neccessary (there are many here willing to help), but in the long run, make the decision based on what YOU feel is right. Good luck and keep us posted! |

| please request a pre-anesthetic blood panel before surgery, it evaluates the the liver and kidney, they must be functioning properly for the breakdown and removal of common anesthetic from the pups bodyblood. If a pup is dehydrated, liver or kidney function is not adequate, low blood flow to the kidneys during anesthesia can cause kidney failure. Heart problems can also be exaggerated during anesthesia. This has always been my practice, I would rather be safe than sorry, the standard panel runs about $60.00 in additional to the spay or neuter costs. hope this helps Kimberly

| Spaying My yorkie just had to be spayed. She was 5 weeks into her pregnacy and had an infection..When the Vet said she had to be spay right away I freaked, when they went in the pups had already died.. Knowing what I know now she would have been spayed at 6 mos. |
