| Walking Yorkies Hi all, I have 2 one year old yorkies. Biewer yorkies. Anyone else have one? I love them dearly. Lately one has refused to walk with me and the other yorkie. He just puts his 4 little legs down firm and won't go a step further. Sometimes I can't get him to come of his own accord off the porch. Other times, he halts mid-walk and seems to say, this way. Anyone else have walking problems like this? Our other yorkie is eager to walk anywhere. Since this second one controls toys and activities in the house, is the first one just claiming outdoors is my territory? |

| My little one, Ricky will put the brakes on when he doesn't feel like taking another step...and if you want him to go, you literally would have to drag him, which I won't do because I am afraid his pads will get cut up from dragging him...so I usually just scoop him up and keep going and put him down a few minutes later and he will walk again. I don't know why he does this and why I haven't been able to break him of it. He goes on walks twice daily in the summer so you'd think he'd be used to walking on a leash. In the past, when I've had dogs that refused to walk, a few nudges on the leash or calling their name would get them going again but Ricky is a stubborn little thing. He's done this since I got him. My other pup has no problems walking on the leash...occasionally, he will get stuck on a scent, but he doesn't put on the brakes like Ricky does. | Bring some treats and use it to lure him along until he gets the hang of it.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Walking Shelby is a great walker (and runner) but at times she does the "I don't want to go" or "I want to go this way, not the way you want to go." (This is not a late in the walk, she's tired, thing - she's just trying to control the route, which, frankly, ain't happening.). Nice thing about a 6 lb. dog is that I can just calmly pick her up, walk maybe 25 feet in the direction I want us to go, and then put her down - she always gets it. Once she's been walking along me for a little while at right pace (I don't allow pulling on leash either - I just stop if she tries) she gets a treat for getting with the program. Totally works and we have great walks (and runs!) |

| Hey, thank-you, everyone! I will not drag him anymore and try the pick-up method with treats. At least I will know I am not the only yorkie carrier or 'owner' with a strong willed yorkie. You have affirmed me and encourage me! Again, thank-you! |

| Magnus loves to walk but Zoey wants to be carried at least some parts of the way. I used to make her was but later on found out her pads were getting cut so I started carrying her whenever she gives me the signal. My arms got tired so I bought a doggie backpack. Whenever I bring it out, she knows we're going for a "walk". So she sits in front of the backpack when I put it on the floor. LOL |

| Looks like there's a few Yorkies that put on the brakes. We call it "Eeyore-ing'. My feller sometimes Eeyores on walks when he wants to take a different route. We use the happy voice or excited voice to get him moving again. Then he gets lots of praise.

| What a wonderful way of looking at this! 'Eeyore-ing'! This image turns his stopping into a joyful moment instead of a struggle. Thank-you. And positive distraction does help, yes, especially chippies! |

| Think all dogs do this at some point in time. I had labs growing up and I use to take them running with me. I would run about 1 1/2 miles daily on our neighbors farms. I would run with them on a leash and there were times when we were running they would just sit on the ground and not move. Now what do you do when you have 60-80 lb Lab that doesn't want to run anymore? Can't pick them up. So I would unleash them and tell them to go home. They would cut across the fields and take a direct path home. Our little Maggie will do this also, but it is usually when she is just pooped and wants to fall asleep in our arms. Many times we would be out walking and she will just flop on the ground, so I scoop her up and she is sleeping within 5 minutes. (they are so adorable) |

| I can easily imagine a little tired out yorkie in our arms! Thank-you! Buddy stops on the front porch, not even one step down toward the walkway and street. I guess he's saying 'not now' or 'you're not the leader' or....??? |
