| Since summer is coming.. Does my baby need heartworm and flea protection? My baby is going to get her rabies shot soon and since the weather will be getting warmer she will be outside more than she is now.. and there will be a lot of Mosquitos outside. My vet wanted to give Chloe some pills, but I don't want to give her anything that isn't natural or something I don't know fully about. Do you give your baby anything for heartworm and flea prevention? I saw pictures of heart worm and knowing how many Mosquitos are out in the summer.. It scared me. I definitely think I need to protect my baby.

| You need to give heartworm pills all year, every single month of the dog's life. We use heartgard and we also use frontline for fleas/ticks.

I also wanted to know if you give your babies any vitamins like fish oil, etc? I see a lot of vitamins in the pet store which is making me wonder if I'm suppose to be giving something.

| Those are the pills that the vet wanted to give me, but he wanted 70$ for it and I wasn't sure if she needed this. After I looked up heartworm though, I'm pretty sure she needs protection. These are the only 2 things they need protection from right?

| I use revolution and you only apply it once a month. it has the heart worm/flea and tick meds all in one. I have never had an issue and my babies are tested for lyme and hw each year. frontline plus and Advantix II were no longer working for us. I order from petshed.com which is the cheapest I have ever found the revolution.

| no I believe you can bath them 48 hours safely afterward...may even be 2 hours after I cannot remember which is which. thats why i like it plus it actually keeps them flea free. i did also get the yard spray again this year which also helps control the population in your yard.

| No, you don't need to reapply after a bath because the active ingredient is absorbed into the blood through the skin, BUT you should wait at least a day, and preferably two days after you apply it before you give your dog a bath, just to be sure it has time to be absorbed. |

| Thank you for the Pet Shed website...it is very inexpensive compared to what I pay to the vet. |

| You need to give heart worm preventive all year and test for it once a year. The treatment for heart worms is poison and can and has killed small dogs and if it doesn't kill them it will leave them with lasting heart problems. Heart worms is very serious. I would not use trifexis because it has been linked to many many dog deaths. Sentinel and heartguard are great choices. I use heartguard for heart worms and then Advantix for fleas and ticks but we have more of a tick problem here then flea problem.

| Revolution isn't used for dogs here. I've had at least three vets tell me they won't recommend it. We used interceptor for about 10 years and heartgard for the last four. It's $80 for 12 doses with a $12 rebate here.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I use Revolution, order it from PetMeds. I have to take the Yorkies in for a heartworm test before my vet will put the order in for me to get it. You have to have a vet prescribe it. I had no problems with this med. Of course I do not let my boys run free in the grass. I am careful not to let them in bushes when camping. To me this is a lot safer than other stuff. Be vey careful what you use, some stuff dogs vomit after and I do not like that! |
