You need to give heart worm preventive all year and test for it once a year. The treatment for heart worms is poison and can and has killed small dogs and if it doesn't kill them it will leave them with lasting heart problems. Heart worms is very serious. I would not use trifexis because it has been linked to many many dog deaths. Sentinel and heartguard are great choices. I use heartguard for heart worms and then Advantix for fleas and ticks but we have more of a tick problem here then flea problem.
