| Pre spay/neuter blood work. Did your vet do it? Our current vet says she does pre-op blood work and does a lateral flank spay. It costs $375. I don't recall my other yorkies getting blood work before being neutered/spayed. Does your vet do it? Just curious |

| Yes. Out vet offers and recommends blood work before any non-emergency surgery. ZoE had a mid-line spay tough, not a lateral flank.

| Yes, I wouldn't have any surgery done without blood work.

| Just to clarify, I am doing the blood work....just wanted to see if it was the norm (since it wasn't for my other dogs) I am still investigating the lateral flank spay vs the midline. I'm not thrilled with them each having a side shaved and having a big bald spot :-/ With a yorkie and a papillon, it will be obvious and I'm not sure how long until it grows back (plus Lilah has never had a haircut bc Im growing her out) Last edited by Sukey; 03-08-2014 at 07:15 AM. |

| Neither of my dogs were neutered under my care...but if they were, I'd absolutely be getting pre-op blood work done to make sure my dog is healthy enough to tolerate the anesthesia and surgery. There's always a risk when putting an animal under for surgery. I want to make it as least risky as possible. |

| Absolutely my vet does blood work before any thing where they will need anesthesia. My uncle didn't know about the blood work thing so I told him about it before his little girl pup went under and it was a good thing I did because her liver had issues and going under at that time could have had complications and possibly killed her. She ended up on medicine and eventually havering to get it done with a specialist.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would absolutely get blood work prior to any surgery. My vet gives you the choice, but always recommends bloodwork due to the risks of surgery.

| There is sort of a choice here for young dogs, but it is strongly suggested. All pets should have labs before spay/neuter. Some vets don't believe it is necessary in young animals which leads me to believe they were sleeping during congenital disease lectures. I was reading about the lateral spay after you posted the other day. I see the application for feral cats/nursing moms. I would not go this route with my Yorkie. Bleeding is harder to control and if by chance there is a uterine infection that had been undetected it would be harder to safely deal with it. IMO, not the end of the world but midline spay is what I'd want.

| I did it before their neuters as well as before dentals. I want to do everything I can to ensure their safety and health. |
