There is sort of a choice here for young dogs, but it is strongly suggested. All pets should have labs before spay/neuter. Some vets don't believe it is necessary in young animals which leads me to believe they were sleeping during congenital disease lectures.
I was reading about the lateral spay after you posted the other day. I see the application for feral cats/nursing moms. I would not go this route with my Yorkie. Bleeding is harder to control and if by chance there is a uterine infection that had been undetected it would be harder to safely deal with it. IMO, not the end of the world but midline spay is what I'd want.
