YorkieTalk Newbie! | ![]() Hello everyone. I just created an account, but I’m very familiar with the site. Ever since Romina came into my life I’ve been reading all of the tips and blog entries with questions and inquiries I’ve had during our time together. She’s now a year and a half old, healthy and very playfull (still). But now I’m really worried about her short hair. She has a very thick gold and black coat …but short! My family has five yorkies of their own, all of them purebreds with long silky coats and when they were a year of age… their coats became gray with gold. Not my Romina, she’s a year and a half, and I can barely notice a few white hairs growing on her back. The weird thing is that these hairs are completely white (from the root), it’s not changing color in a certain length, just as usual yorkies do. Not only that, her hair does not grow (in length). Every time I brush her, tons of hair gets trapped into her brush. She has a lot of hair in quantity, and there are no hairless spots at all, it’s just that there is no growth in the length of her hair, it just seems eternally short. I feed her with Royal Canine for Yorkshire Terriers 28, and a little bit of chicken just as treats. BUT is this normal?? I’m I the only one with this issue???? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| ![]() I have no ideas for you, but I took a look at her picture album and she is a cutie! I like the length of her hair.

YT 2000 Club Member | ![]() I have a female that is 1 1/2 years and she is still very black on her back. I also had a little girl for almost 11 years and she remained black! Some yorkies don't change and if they do it could take up to 3 years to get there true coat color. I can't tell you why it doesn't grow, as mine get hair cuts quite often!

| ![]() She could have short hair and white hairs due to mutations in her genes but it's also possible she's got another/other breed(s) in her pedigree, whether her breeder knows about it or not. Yorkies usually don't shed much hair into the hairbrush as short-haired dogs and other shedding breeds will. Does she have the body shape, tail set, same small erect ears, head/neck type, muzzle length/eye/nose ratio, and facial appearance of the majority of Yorkies you have seen here or in the Yorkie books or the results of Googling Yorkshire Terrier images?

| ![]() Some yorkies will not turn "blue", some will stay black like yours. As she gets older, she might get some grey hairs. I have one who is black and she does have a softer coat too than my silky dogs…. |

| ![]() Golly, I missed the pictures before somehow! They weren't even showing up or I had such a small window I scrolled past them but don't know how I could! She sure looks like she could be a purebred Yorkie to me. She's precious! Probably just a mutation of one sort or another with the coat. What does her breeder say about it?

| ![]() my last yorkie she just went to rainbow bridge at the age of 16 y/o, her body was pure black, no grey at all, face & legs were auburn, she was born that color and passed that color, her hair never grew, it was fine hair and shiny, silky, her body hair never grew longer the 3 inches past her tummy. My first yorkie was the same color black body, auburn face , but had long , long hair. I can't say why my last baby's hair never grew in length, to me it was fine, less stressful trips to the groomer lol. I prefer the pure black body & auburn face and legs. Hope you can find your answer. Your babies are lil cutie pies.

| ![]() Our Kyra is over 2 years old and still all black on her back. Laddy stayed very pale yellow and white on his face and head until he was almost 5 years old. Now it is all a beautiful dark gold. We don't have any problem getting their coats to obtain length though.
