| reverse sneezing-spay question First I want to say- pls no links to why you shouldn't spay/neuter- I have done enough research to form my own opinion. I have an important question regarding my "baby" lilly- she is now over 6mo old. She has to have surgery on her eyes- her tear ducts don't work- either they are blocked or have not formed- the surgery was to be done when she was getting spayed. She has in the last week developed a reverse sneeze (it sounds just like a sneeze going in instead of out- if that makes sense) my vet agrees over the phone that it sounds like reverse sneeze, but I am making an apt to make sure that this is what it is. Anyways- my question is, if this is for sure a reverse sneeze, is it going to do more damage to her if I have her put under for surgery? I just want to also add- I have all fixed females in my home except for her- her "mom" had to be fixed because after her pregnancy she was in a constant heat state for months- is was uncomfortable for her to be in this state. I need to get her eyes done, I believe because her face is always wet. and it smells often and she has a big risk of infection (according to my vet) so, after this long post- with a reverse sneeze situation, is it safe for them to have surgery... since they get a breathing tube? Thanks edited to add- I will also ask my vet- but I have found that the more knowledge I can get the better- and many people here are very knowledgable on yorkies Last edited by minniemn; 01-03-2006 at 08:15 PM. |

| My dogs from time to time will do what I think you are describing but they are inhaling into their lungs. Is this what your little girl is doing?

| I have no idea if it is going into her lungs or not- the episodes are very short lasting, but happens when she gets excited (playing with us, her mom or the cat) it doesn't sound like a goose sound or a cough. I will have my scope around so when she does it again I can listen to her lungs... thanks my first sentance on my first post sounds rude, I didn't mean for it to, I just don't want a huge debate on s/n... I apologize for sounding so rude. |

| Oh everyone gets a little testy on the neuter issue. not to worry. When one of mine does it he usually stops dead in his tracks and then it looks like he can't catch his breath and he is breathing in deeply...it used to scare me but now I am used to it. He was neutered without a problem so I just don't know. I will be interested in what your vet thinks.

| I didn't think they put a tube in their throat for neutering...especially not yorkies due to the fraile tracheas??? Am I incorrect? |

I hope everything goes well w/ your baby...when is she scheduled for the eye surgery? How did you guys even figure out this was what was wrong...obviously, the dog can't tell you, so I am curious as to what the symptoms were. I sure hope everything goes well...you got me on the 'reverse cough' though...that's a new one on me!

| I don't know if I'm much help, but when I used to work at the vet office. They did put a tube down the throught of a small dog (like 20lbs) for a hernia surgery, but did not for a neuter and when they declawed a cat I had to hold an oxygen mask over it's little face. When my cat got spayed (i stayed and watched) they did not use a tube or oxygen mask and she was fine. The surgery took at most 10 minutes. Logan does a reverse sneezing thing, but only when excited. He had no problem with his neuter. I would imagine yours won't either because they should be asleep therefore relaxed. My understand of reverse sneezing is that it's almost like asmetha (sp?) since your vet knows he has this problems I would imagine they would let you know if there could be any complications.

We opted to have the surgery for her eyes with her spay, because she was tiny at the time, she is now 5.5 lbs... so she will be under longer- all of her baby teeth have fallen out, so she can have the surgery now. (I wanted to wait to make sure no teeth were retained first) I was under the assumption that there would be a tube down her throat, since there was for her mom, and the surgery will be longer because of the eye surgery she also needs. I feel a lot better now though knowing that others have had the surgery with the reverse sneezing and things worked out fine. I will be making the apt today then. Thanks everyone for the posts
