| Puppy question Hello, This is my first post. I am very excited to be in the process of purchasing my first yorkie puppy. I have done my research and waited a long time and I am finally ready. The puppy I am purchasing is a male. I have visited the home , meet the breeder and puppies parents, they are AKC registered. I will have my puppy neutered when the vet says appropriate time. Although I am not looking for a tint dog Inwould like one within the breed standard size. I also u dear stand temperment is much more I portent than size. The temperments of parents seems calm and friendly. There is a litter of six, four females and two males. One male was already spoken for so I am getting the other one. He weighed 3.8 ozs at birth, last week at 3 weeks he weighed 1lb.2 and today at 4 weeks he is already 1.6. Does this seem big for 4 weeks, she told me he will be between 4-5 lbs but when I look at the charts - he is charting to be much bigger. She said she doesn't know what charts I am referencing but her puppies have never been large or over 6 lbs. I know you can't guarantee size and he is so cute, but does 1.6 seem on the bigger size for 4 weeks? I paid 1500 does this seem reasonable? This forum has been so helpful.Thank you! |

| It is far, far too early to determine the adult weight of your chosen Yorkie, so I would be inclined to trust the breeder. The price is not unreasonable if the breeder is reputable, and it seems like you've done your homework. At what age will you be getting your puppy? |

| $1500 for an AKC male is normal in most areas, especially New England where prices tend to be a bit higher. It is impossible to guarantee size. The only thing anyone can do is make a wild guess. The chart is a loose guideline. Another loose guideline is to double the weight at 12 weeks. Still, this is no guarantee. Max was 3 pounds 1 ounce at 13 weeks. He is now 9 pounds. His brother Teddy, same parents, was not even 6 pounds at 8 months. He is now 8 pounds. Admittedly, they are the biggest of their respective litters. The others stayed within standard.

| Make sure your breeder does health and genetic testing. Also make sure your puppy will be staying with the mom until 12 weeks. Those are two really big things that show whether a breeder is truly reputable that and they will not breed a female under 5 pounds.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Hello and welcome to YT. Did you find your breeder from the YTCA website or a local club? The charts are a guide but not always right. Also the breeders, that have been breeding for a while can tell about how big they are going to be. But it is not an exact science. Galen charted bigger and he stopped growing. I would just make sure she is a reputable breeder. If you want you can share her name.
