| Senior Yorkie - Change in sleeping routine Hello everyone, I would love input regarding the changes in my senior yorkie's behavior. Wiggles is 14 years old. She has always cuddled up and slept with us. She would not get up until I got up in the morning. Starting just last month she will not stay in bed at all. When I put her in the bed, she runs to the side and gets ready to jump (I quickly pick her up and put her down on the floor). She will sleep in her dog bed (in our room) until about 12 or 1 am at which time she gets up and wants out of our room. I take her outside and she pees then runs back inside and into a room off our kitchen where she has another bed. (This is the room I put her and my other yorkie in when I am gone for more than an hour or so). I close the door and she will sometimes sleep there until I get up around 5 or 5:30 but other times she will start barking around 4 or 4:30 am. This started a few days after I started giving her baytril for bronchitis. I thought perhaps the meds made her restless but the vet said no. She has been off the meds for a few weeks but the behavior has not gone back to normal. I took her to the vet and they did bloodwork and urinalysis that came back normal. Said her heart and lungs sounded good. When I tried to explain her unusual behavior lately the vet was dismissive and said it sounded behavioral and he wasn't a dog psychologist. Obviously I was quite annoyed at him (my usual vet was not in the day I took Wiggles in so this was a different vet). I called my usual vet a couple days later and she discussed it with me but she was puzzled and didn't have any answers either. She did suggest that it could be a senior issue. So does anyone have a similar situation? I have talked to my friends that have dogs and everyone is stumped. She also urinates more than usual but I am a senior as well and I do the same so I can understand that issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome to YT. I had a very senior rescue, Nikki. He was guesstimated to be 18 or so when he died. I only had him 2 1/2 years, but he always slept in his dog bed next to me. Then he started getting up during the night and would just stand on the floor looking confused. My vet felt it was related to his advanced age. I also had a pom who had what they say is like a doggy dementia. There is a medicine called anipyrl (sp) that can help with it. It's hard to see them age.

| Since everything checked out at the vet I would think it is age related. I notice that my 10 year old senior is going outside more often and is wanting out in the night a little more frequently. But sometimes she doesn't want to eat until later in the day and I think that is part of the reason for going out later in the night. I think she is a little more nervous at times (just within the last couple of years she started being afraid of new noises) and more clingy since she has gotten older. I notice her eyes are a bit cloudy and she is nervous about jumping off the bed in the dark. I keep a flashlight by the bed and when I feel her pacing and trying to decide if she is going to jump, I turn on the light for her. I can't tell if her sleeping habits have changed because she has always changed her sleeping place all night long. Welcome to YorkieTalk. I love the name Wiggles!

| My little girl, Ashley, also began to act much more anxious and restless at night, and we also noticed some other subtle changes the last year of her life. We discovered she had Canine Cognitive Dysfunction at the age of sixteen. Anipryl helped her anxiety and confusion. It wasn't a Miracle drug, but it allowed Ashley to still have a good quality of life, even with her dementia. Preventing Ashley from jumping off of the bed was challenging, even though she had a ramp she was used to. It may not be related at all to this, but here is a checklist that might help. I didn't think it was possible, but we grew to love Ashley even more during this period of her life. I wouldn't have given up a second with her. http://www.cdsindogs.com/PDF/CDSInDogs/ANIPRYL.pdf If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

| Thanks for your replies. I think it must be a senior thing. She seems her usual self other than this. Will just have to wait and see what happens. |
