Senior Yorkie - Change in sleeping routine Hello everyone,
I would love input regarding the changes in my senior yorkie's behavior.
Wiggles is 14 years old. She has always cuddled up and slept with us. She would not get up until I got up in the morning. Starting just last month she will not stay in bed at all. When I put her in the bed, she runs to the side and gets ready to jump (I quickly pick her up and put her down on the floor). She will sleep in her dog bed (in our room) until about 12 or 1 am at which time she gets up and wants out of our room. I take her outside and she pees then runs back inside and into a room off our kitchen where she has another bed. (This is the room I put her and my other yorkie in when I am gone for more than an hour or so). I close the door and she will sometimes sleep there until I get up around 5 or 5:30 but other times she will start barking around 4 or 4:30 am.
This started a few days after I started giving her baytril for bronchitis. I thought perhaps the meds made her restless but the vet said no. She has been off the meds for a few weeks but the behavior has not gone back to normal.
I took her to the vet and they did bloodwork and urinalysis that came back normal. Said her heart and lungs sounded good. When I tried to explain her unusual behavior lately the vet was dismissive and said it sounded behavioral and he wasn't a dog psychologist. Obviously I was quite annoyed at him (my usual vet was not in the day I took Wiggles in so this was a different vet). I called my usual vet a couple days later and she discussed it with me but she was puzzled and didn't have any answers either. She did suggest that it could be a senior issue.
So does anyone have a similar situation? I have talked to my friends that have dogs and everyone is stumped.
She also urinates more than usual but I am a senior as well and I do the same so I can understand that issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening. |
