| Please Please get pet insurance! This summer I saw a thread on Yorkietalk asking owners to make sure that they get insurance, and although I have personally never had it, I decided to get it for 7 year old Teddy and Lola. I used it here and there for little things, but this past weekend while someone was watching Lola for me she jumped off of a high bed onto a tile floor and broke her leg (very very bad break) First of all breaks are just awful. Secondly, she has to get surgery and the Total with Vet visits will be around 4800. I just wanted to let everyone know that I would be in deep trouble if I didn't have insurance right now. Please make sure to get some!

| We are deciding now, based on the noises from our baby's hip and having two active Yorkies, that Pet Insurance is probably a must for us. Would you recommend the company you chose? I'm so sorry about Lola. May she heal well and quickly. |

| You still have to pay that money up front then get reimbursed for it. Callie has so many genetic and pre existing conditions if I got one for her when she was a puppy that covered genetic issues it might have worked but it's probably to late for it to be useful for us. Sorry bout your pup.

| Poor Lola and you! I am very sorry you are going through this, but glad you have insurance. Teddy must be sad that his little sister is injured. Praying for little Lola for a successful surgery and full recovery.

| Great post. I used to think insurance was worthless. Now quite the opposite. I would not have another uninsured dog. Even if I had gotten Ellie insured 3 years ago at age 9 it still would have been worth it.

| I'm so sorry to hear about Lola. I am praying for the surgery to go flawlessly, for her leg to heal quickly, and for Lola to be free from pain.

| Oh my God, I'm so sorry to hear about little Lola's leg. How long is it forecast that she will be out of commission from playing Super Mario on Teddy?

| Insurance So sorry about your baby, hope she gets well soon. Yes, insurance is a must in my view. I use Trupanion and it covers genetic diseases I believe. I got it for my rescue boy at 1.5 years thinking he may break a bone as he is a jumper.....but no, after six months he had to have cataract surgery. Totally unexpected and it cost around $4000! Yes you do have to pay first, but the refund usually comes well before the credit card bill. You can tailor your monthly fee to what deductible you want. I pay more as I chose 0% . It is so comforting not to have to worry about tests etc. it also pays 50% of prescription food costs. I have never had any issue with any claim. There are online sites that compare coverage. |

Hi there, Yes, I think the insurance is definitely a must. When I used to walk into the vets office and I would see the little pamphlets for it, I thought is was probably a waste, but I was also fortunate enough to have owned 3 dogs without and major catastrophes. When I started reading the posts on Yorkietalk it opened my eyes to what could happen, and I realized that I needed to be able to take care of my babies no matter what. I think the post I read was from Gemy? I remember sitting there the week before I picked up Lola and let's face it, just using the time I had to keep doing things to be ready for her arrival, and there was a post, urging pet owners to get insurance. I got Trupanion insurance and I have been very happy with it. So far I believe they have already mailed me three checks for different claims with Lola and there was no hassle. When the Vet gave me the different estimates and I told him that I got Trupanion he smiled and said: How did you know to get that? That is the best one! I told him that I read the posts on Yorkietalk and it was highly recommended. Even though this is a very difficult thing to go through, and I feel so worried about my Lola, I am thanking my lucky stars that I have coverage. This is pretty massive! So yes, I would definitely recommend Trupanion, and even researching the companies to see which one you like the most, and makes sense for you. Thank you so much for the well wishes for Lola, I am grateful to be part of such a supportive community.

On the bright side, my breeder recommended this surgeon and he is a bone specialist and I am thrilled with him. He explained everything in depth, was very kind and is also extremely knowledgeable. He is located in Dedham, MA (20 minuted from Boston) and I highly recommend him if anyone needs a surgeon. His name is Dr. William Henry. Lola was supposed the be spayed today but now that can't happen. I just ordered her some little underwear and diapers just in case! Poor little Lola, she might wind up wearing a diaper, a cast and a cone to keep her from ripping off her cast (she tries)

| So true Ellie and it's easier to have a little money taken out every month than to come up with several thousand at the same time!
