I have a number of questions as a new Yorkie momma, so please help!

1.) What do you guys think about microchipping? The local vet offers it for 82 dollars, and I have a ten dollar off coupon. I am unsure as to whether or not I should do it. It's a surgical procedure and it makes me a little nervous to have it done. I don't know a huge amount about it, so I was hoping for a few opinions.

2.) Grooming. How often should I get him groomed? SHOULD I get him regularly groomed? Are all yorkies going to have that weird super long hair if they aren't groomed regularly? Is 7 weeks too young to start?

Yes on the Micro chipping!!! You can take care of this when you get him neutered. The needle is pretty thick and it goes in between the shoulder blades, so it can be a little painful. I've see dogs have panic attacks and some who don’t even flinch- it depends on the dog however it is best to get it done while they are under anesthesia.

Grooming really depends on you. If you want him in a long coat, shaggy coat, shaved, trimmed.. etc. I would wait until he has all vaccines.

Most groomer won’t even allow dogs in there that aren't up to date on shots.

We get Peanut shaved in the hot months, and we will usually let him grow out shaggy for the colder months. I think this year I may keep him groomed- not sure.. depending on how cold it gets LOL Since I live in Cali we don’t really see cold winters!

Congratulations on your new puppy! I agree with microchipping and having it done when he is neutered.

Grooming -- I also agree with waiting until he has had all of his puppy shots. Ask for groomer recommendations from other people with small dogs.

I do all of my doggies' grooming at home. My boys are in full coat, but I trimmed Max's hair until he was about 6 months old.

The frequency of grooming depends on the dog and the style you choose. Some Yorkies grow hair very fast and others are slower. There are also daily and weekly things to keep up like eyes, nails, and so on.

At 7 weeks he should still be with his mother and litter mates. He isn't anywhere near ready to be groomed professionally, but you need to get him used to being brushed out at home.

Add another yes to the microchip. It's worth every penny to have that piece of mind.

Very good point. Work with him every day getting him accustomed to being touched from his ears to his paws, and to accept brushing and other grooming. These are things that good breeders do when the pup stays with them longer.

I say yes to the chip but you need to read on how old and the wight that a yorkie need to be to have surgery . Cuz you don't want to have any thing happen . And the groomer will tell you about how often to come . But I have a 6month old yorkie Tiger and the 1 time he was bout 9 weeks old after his second set of shots and it was a trim and that's what still get at 6 month . !!!

welcome to yt and congrats on ur new bundle of love. for now i would brush him and get him used to your grooming him. you can clean him up daily and you may want to start brushing his teeth while still young. you dont have to use toothpaste at this time but it will help get him used to the tooth brush. touch his paws and all over so he is used to being touched everywhere. yes on the micro chip.....as stated above if he gets lost a. you can prove hes yours and b. it is worth every penny.

I know he's too little for grooming but I didn't know if yorkies were the kind of dogs that really NEED to be groomed.

Also, as far as microchipping goes, once it's in, how does it work? Is it like a GPS, or is it just something that if my dog is lost and he's returned to a shelter they can find me? If he's stolen, how does it help me unless there's a GPS?

Yorkies are in the category of dogs who need the most grooming of all.

The microchip does not work as a GPS. I wish it did. The microchip requires scanning by a handheld device and is used for identification purposes only. Vets and most shelters have scanners. It's like a mini ID tag inside your dog. The microchip offers backup identification in case a dog isn't wearing an ID tag.
