Just wanted to add: keep an eye on your bank accounts.... after I signed a petition a few weeks later I got a call from my bank.... seems the petition's database had been compromised (hacked), hence the hackers had access to any info I gave the website they required before I could sign the petition... so no more petitions for me.

I have to say on the one hand I would love to sign it, but on the other hand I decided not too. Here is my reason why, besides putting my personal Info in jeopardy, this was how I was able to rescue Gizmo. One of my neighbors had alerted me to this small pup that was being advertised on Craigslist and unlike caring puppy owners, she was a backyard breeder that had a pup that was dying. The girl that was breeding all sorts of different dogs, a byb, knew he was near death and was trying to get the money out of him before he died. She was refusing to take him to the vet and was determined to get money out of him before he died. My neighbor had even offered to take him for free so she could get him help, but the byb refused saying she wanted the money dor him, and my neighbor did not have it. My neighbor knew of all the animals my husband and I had rescued, so she came to my house and showed me the listing. I called immediately and got there as fast as possible, there fore being able to rescue him, and being able to turn the breeder in to animal control.

Had she not put him on Craigslist, Gizmo would be dead right now. So I'm actually glad she had Craigslist at her disposal so I was able to rescue him and save his life. A week later my daughter found a similar situation, and was able to rescue a maltipoo puppy that she named Dash, who was also very sick and is now healthy. The pup my daughter rescued was only 5 weeks old being sold by a teenage girl who did not know how to care for puppies, and she was also a run away with her dog when it had its puppies.

There are a lot of these types of situations on there, you would not believe how many. We often go on there and look for pups ads that don't seem quite right and we have paid the reforming fees to get them away from these people, and get them to loving homes. So in a sense, it has actually helped us to save several puppies that otherwise would probably not have survived. That is why I am so trn on this issue, because at times it can actually help to save them from bad situations.

The way Gizmo was advertised, was that the breeder had a larger dog, that was beating up on him so he had to be rehomed immediately . I already knew what the situation was and was sickened to see her advertising him as a pet, when I knew for a fact that he was not a pet, and she was a breeder, but this is hw they work. They will advertise like loving pet owners and that they are trying to do what is right for the puppy, when instead they are greedy people just trying to make as much money as quick as they can.

Just another perspective :-)

This is very sad.
Here we have a couple of websites just like craiglist where people can search for animals and where people can sell animals.
As sad as this is. It's not craiglist's fault.
the people posting their pets for sell will find another way to sell them and the people who wants the animals for abuse will find a way to get them.
It's not the responsibility of craiglist to make sure the animals are save.
It's the responsibility of the people selling them.

Oow I forgot to add:
Our yorkie rescue group frequently checks marktplaats (our craiglist) out to see if there are yorkies and other small breeds they can help re-home.

I totally agree :-)

Plus I also think its much easier to get an animal from our many many shelters here in California and a lot cheaper. In California it's illegal to adopt out black cats at Halloween because of the many horrible things that happen to them.

The rehoming fees here in Cali are much much higher than what the shelters charge for adoption. I gave $400 to save Gizmo from a byb that was willing to let him die. First the rehoming fee was $300, and once she seen how determined I was to get him to a vet, she demanded another $100. The thing is she knew as soon as I checked his gums and seen they were pitch white, and that he wouldn't awe up, and I knew he was near deaths door, she knew I would give it to her to save him.

The shelters on the other hand here charge around $75 max to adopt a dog and let the people take them, without being fixed, giving them. Coupon for free spay or neuter, so which is worse? The people dong these things to these animals are responsible, and we can only try to help as much as we can. The stark reality is nothing will stop these people unfortunately, they will just find a new avenue to accomplish their goal :-(

This is exactly what my daughter and I do. We never have a problem finding good family and friends to love those we find. Of course on a much smaller scale, but every animal counts :-) every one of my pet family is a rescue. My 3 cats were all from feral mama's, that my husband found being a firefighter, and he brought me them home to bottle feed. I've bottle fed 5 litters of kittens just from refineries in the area, where people would dump the mommies, who would end up pregnant and then with kittens. My cat Lucy was from the first litter I raised 12 years ago, from 2 days old. She is now Gizmos best friend as she has adopted all the babies I have rescued :-) Of course Gizmo has stolen my heart and he's in his forever home xoxo.

It's wonderful that some people actually give animals on Craig's list good homes but there are far more sickos out there than good people who can invite a new pet into the house.
People who use dog's to train their other dogs to kill use up their bait very quickly. There are gangs of sick people that get their kicks out of torturing all sizes and types of innocent animals.
With the type of economy this country is struggling through more and more people are having to find homes for their pets as they have to move into an apartment or in with relatives and there are always those who get a pet never realizing how much work they will be. Please consider doing what you can to stop the abuse.

Just for clarification - Craigslist doesn't allow pets for sale - (I know I know)

"Household pets of any kind including dogs, cats, primates, cage birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, fish. Re-homing with small adoption fee OK. Pet animal parts, blood, or fluids are also not permitted, including stud/breeding service. "

I think the petition should be for enforcing their rules.

Weekly I go through the yorkie pet ads, and any that are selling and obviously not rehoming - I flag as not allowed content in my area. I suggest each of you the same.

The real problem is the sickos out there - the people who don't take care of their animals.

I think more time needs to be spent on educating people about selling, buying and rehoming a dog. It does not matter how a puppy or adult is advertised but the important thing is how the prospective buyers are screened. I see many people selling and rehoming dogs on FB too. You have to look at both sides. When a person has a puppy to sell or an adult to rehome the owner should look for the best possible match for their dog. It is not always easy to do. In the past before the internet people would have to advertise in the newspaper. I think the internet has made it possible for people to find good homes for their dogs. It does not matter how you advertise, the important thing is how you screen your buyers. What makes me mad is that some people do tell lies when they are getting a dog and sometimes a dog will end up in the wrong hands. I don't think that possibility can ever be completely eliminated.
