| Wondering if I should get another dog? I have a 6 year old yorkie and she is such a mama's girl. My boyfriend and i would love a friend for her but are unsure since she is already used to it being just us. Has anyone gotten a mate/friend for their yorkie? and can you share some stories. We are looking for a little boy.:a thank you |

| welcome to Yt! there may be some transition time. and a boy would probably be a much easier adjustment for her. if you get a puppy it may be even easier but imo either way they are used to being the only child so it takes some time. wishing you the best in your decision.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Are you gone much of the time? If so, I think another dog is a great idea. If not, it still could be a good idea, but I too would probably go with a male and a young one, so that she wouldn't feel threatened. Let her be the alpha and teach the pup about bite inhibition, those puppy teeth are sharp and she may snap at him, but let her, he'll learn. Remember, it probably won't be all roses, and may take some time before they are best friends. Make sure she is spayed!

Some dogs get along perfectly right from the start. Others may require an adjustment period. Max has an independent only-child personality. When we brought Teddy home, they got along very well, but Max did have some jealousy issues. Most of the issues were worked out quickly. The only one that took time was allowing Teddy to sleep in the bed with us. My boys love the company of each other, but they do not self-entertain. Now I have 2 little faces always looking to me. It really comes down to the individual dogs.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Well, I'm not a fan of mixes unless your doing a rescue, I just don't believe in supporting breeders who breed mixes. Are you getting an older dog? Since you're gone so much, it might be hard for you to get a puppy and train it, you would have to put it in a x-pen and it would be away for the other dog, what's your plan on this? An older dog might be a better option and you could let them meet in a neutral zone.

| I had the same fear as you when we first considered getting Magnus a playmate. When I went to go see Zoey, I took Magnus with me to see how he would react. In the end, they're not the best of friends BUT I think they prefer being together than not. How does your little girl get along with others in general? Perhaps you can make a judgement based off that. |

| She's not 100% friendly. She is a bit shy. I don't think an older dog would work. She has a strong personality. I think a puppy would be an easier adjustment for her. I'm not too worried about training a new dog. There are two of us to help. |

| I think a lot can depend on your dog. Mine loves other dogs and loves my moms yorkie who comes over at least once a week but at the end of the day she wants to be the only dog and only one who owns me.
