| ![]() Groom at home! I don't know how much money I have saved over the years grooming my two at home. You can get reasonably priced clippers (mine were $30 and have lasted 4 years now!). I trim my two during the summers and let their hair grow out in the winter.

| ![]() I groom at home too. Hannah has not been cut yet but I have a Havanese that I practice on all the time. I think saving your money for emergencies is a great idea and also I think that makes you a good mom! I might be rich if I didn't have so many animals..

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | ![]() I have been grooming at home too. You have wonderful suggestions from everyone. Also i do Galen in stages in the beginning let them get used to you grooming them. I trimmed his privates on day. Bath him the next day. I brush him every day. touching every part of his body. rubbing his feet. massaging him. he gets used to being touched everywhere. I use Cheerios as treats. They are small, little calorie intake and you can get a box cheap. Best of all there is a lot in a box. Lasts a long time.

| ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You might take a while the first few times b/c you're worried about hurting her but it'll get better. Just have patience and try not to get nervous or stressed out. You'll eventually enjoy cutting your baby's hair! |

| ![]() Add me to the list of people who groom at home. I've never spent a penny on grooming for my 2 little ones. I am glad they both are good with long hair because I imagine it's a lot easier cutting than shaving a whole body. I think my trimmer was only around $10 & it works great on the ears, hiney area, & pads. Good luck!

| ![]() I groom my dog as well. But I always brush or comb my dog daily to keep up with it. Even if it only 5 or 10 min a day. I know we all have busy schedules but combing is a must. And no worries remember if you make a mistake the hair grows back. ![]() |

| ![]() I also groom at home, except for nail trimming. I am lucky that Ian loves to have his "Spa Day!" He will actually fall asleep while I'm trimming him; I have to roll him over from side to side...so funny. I keep him in a puppy cut. My first yorkie, Prince, did not like the sound of he clippers, and would take off each time I went into the bathroom because he thought I was going to get them! What I did, before he got sick, was to walk him to tire him out. He was much easier to groom when he was tired.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() I groom my 3 who are in full coat at home. When I had only one dog and was financially stable they went to a professional groomer. Fast forward 3 dogs and unexpected financial hardship I do it myself. I bought good blunt ended scissors and a good comb and brushes. By trial and error I learned to make them presentable. I know a professional groomer would do a better job but I can't afford it and I like that I don't have to take them somewhere and leave them. You can do it!!

Can you recommend a good full size clipper for a beginner? I've been using the same clippers that I use to cut my son's hair, but I think I need to get the pups their own.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() We groom at home, mostly bc we don't trust our dogs in a grooming salon...we'd rather have their grooming done by those who love them dearly. It's not the easiest thing to do, esp if they have a difficult coat - but I promise you'll get the hang of it over time. Do you have the right comb and brush? If not, YT member Mimimomo sells great stuff at great prices.

| ![]() I use the Oster Golden A5, which is still going strong after 18 years of use on my 2 Schnauzers, and for the last 5 years on my Yorkie & 3 Morkies. It is great for the style of haircuts I do, which is shaved back, with longer (scissor cut) hair on legs and head (modified Schnauzer cut, or the "Joey" as we call it on YT). There are attachment combs for different lengths, though I don't use them. I also liked the cordless version of Oster A5 except when battery ran out and eventually it wouldn't charge. A replacement battery was $50 so I opted out. There are so many nice alternatives these days, Andis and Wahl. People who are afraid of electric clippers may do ok with the Scaredy Cut scissor trimmer ![]() Best scissors by far for around eyes, paw pads, and small areas: ![]() One of the other important things to consider eventually is a grooming table with adjustable arm. Pups will learn to stand still and behave much better with one of these than if you do them on the kitchen counter or table (as I used to).

| ![]() The Full size Clippers I have are also the Oster A5 they are very powerful and cut wonderful. (Good for if you were shaving the hold dog down or puppy cut. I do use these on my daughter's Cocker Spaniel but with a grooming guide over the number 10 blade, the blade gets a little too warm for my liking on my clippers) I also have Oster Pro Trimmer I purchased these at Walmart for around $16.00 love these little trimmers great for paws, ears and the sensitive areas and the blade stays on the cooler side. |
