I also groom at home, except for nail trimming. I am lucky that Ian loves to have his "Spa Day!" He will actually fall asleep while I'm trimming him; I have to roll him over from side to side...so funny. I keep him in a puppy cut.
My first yorkie, Prince, did not like the sound of he clippers, and would take off each time I went into the bathroom because he thought I was going to get them! What I did, before he got sick, was to walk him to tire him out. He was much easier to groom when he was tired.
