Help! We just got a Yorkie that will be three next month. He was 'supposedly' potty trained but we have had him 3 weeks and he still hasn't pooped outside. I can't continue to let him destroy carpets but I don't want to get rid of him either. We are his third family. I don't know how to fix this. Any help or advice would be so appreciative.

Wow! Your little guy has had a very unstable life so far, huh? Please take that into account and have patience, ok? You took him on so he's your responsibilty to love and teach. You can do this. We will never know if he was really trained or not. All you can do is start from square one. Get a book on house training or potty training. Many feel the crate method is best. Research and patience. He will probably regress sometimes..they do that. Expect it so you don't get upset when it happens. Remember that he has had his world turned upside down many times. My guess is that he is trained and is just adjusting and unsure. Even if that is true, you still need to take control and start from square one.

Welcome to YT I would just start over with him, put him in a playpen so he won't ruin the carpets and just start over on the potty training as if he was a baby

Not sure if this will work on an older dog, but this is the method I used for Dexter when I got him at 12 weeks: kept an eye in him at all times. Blocked him off so he had to stay in the living room where I could see him and he couldn't go around a corner to do his business. If he started sniffing around or looking like he had to go, i took him out. I had laid blankets down all over my floor in case there was any accidents that I didn't catch in time. If he had one, I could just pick up the blanket and wash it and my carpets were safe. Another option besides blankets is linoleum remnants. They are fairly cheap at stores like Home Depot and Menards. Those you could just lay over your carpet and if there was an accident, clean it up with something like Natures Miracle.

If he's your first dog, 3 weeks might seem like a long time for him to get it right but it's really not. Please be patient with him. Yorkies can be very sensitive so this being his 3rd home might contribute to the potty issue. Is he neutered? I agree with the other members advices on playpens and crate training. I'd also like to add that you invest in a spot cleaner like bissel's spotbot. Patience and consistancy is the hardest thing. I hope things will work out for you and your new furry family.

Maybe he is trained for inside? I would get a couple potty pad holders, some potty pads and the spray that you spray with the pheromones that smell of urine to him. Once you put the pad in the holder, take them outside and spray them with the spray, then bring them back inside and put them where you want him to go, then show him where they are to see if he shows interest, and try a command like "potty on the pad". This has been working awesome for gizmo. I also got the big squirt potty pad holder, as it has 9" high sides on three sides. This works great if he lifts his leg to pee. Welcome and I hope this will be helpful :-) another trick I use, is get a treat, let him smell it, then tap the pad and use the command, then put the treat up out of his reach near the pad. When I do this with Gizmo, he goes potty right away because he totally understands that if he does as I ask, he gets the treat. If he does go, give him the treat and a ton of praise every time. Hopefully he will eventually get it. If you want to train him to go outside, use the method above and just keep moving the pad closer and closer to the door, then start trying outside with the same command and treat.

Thank you so much. I don't want to give up on this little guy. It must be so hard to be with his 3rd family since June. I am crating him and will try the umbilical cord method. He pees better than popping outside. I hope we can get it figured out. I truly appreciate the fast replies.

| if you use pee pads you could try a routine and put him in the tub. i did this with cedric and would not let him out till he did his business. I stayed in there with him until he did. just a thought. be sure he understands what you are trying to teach him and dont scold unless you catch him in the act...stern no then bring him directly outside each and every time. consistency and understanding is key. if your stressed and get upset and he doesnt know what he did it wont help him. wishing you the best of luck.
