Not sure if this will work on an older dog, but this is the method I used for Dexter when I got him at 12 weeks: kept an eye in him at all times. Blocked him off so he had to stay in the living room where I could see him and he couldn't go around a corner to do his business. If he started sniffing around or looking like he had to go, i took him out. I had laid blankets down all over my floor in case there was any accidents that I didn't catch in time. If he had one, I could just pick up the blanket and wash it and my carpets were safe.

Another option besides blankets is linoleum remnants. They are fairly cheap at stores like Home Depot and Menards. Those you could just lay over your carpet and if there was an accident, clean it up with something like Natures Miracle.
