| New Puppy Jack -- Some Questions! Hey Everyone, I will try to break this up into succinct understandable parts. I just got my puppy Jack 7 days ago. He will be 6 months old on the 8th of this month, and is bursting with energy. I am having some issues with a few things. 1. Barking in the crate- This behavior started a few days ago, he went from being quiet in his crate all night to sporadic bouts of barking. These episodes of barking can last upwards of 15 minutes, or as little as 5. When he persists with the barking, I was taking him out to go potty, but he just wanted to play. It is worth noting that during the night, he had not had an accident. I do not want him to learn that barking means I let him out. Should I just ignore the barking and only take him out at the designated potty times? Why would he go from quiet to barking and crying? He was fine before, it has me confused. 2. Potty time troubles- He does not seem to have any idea that outside is the time for potty. Besides giving him praise and treats when he goes outside, and sticking to a schedule, can I get some advice? Last night I walked him for 40 minutes, and he refused to go. We were not back in the house 5 minutes and he had pooped and peed on the floor. I am at a loss as to how to let him know that outside time is potty time. Any experienced puppy people have some sage wisdom? 3. Peeing in the crate- I work all day, sadly. I go home around lunch time to let him out to potty. He is not left in the crate for more than 5 hours at a time. Yet, every time I go home he's had an accident in the crate. He can hold it from 1:00am - 6:00am without an issue. But going during the day is a problem. I did notice yesterday that when I looked at the wet blanket there were actual droplets on his fleece, not just a wet mess. Perhaps he is excited when I come in and pees on himself then? Any advice on what I might be able to do? Any comments or insights are greatly appreciated! |

| I'm sorry, I have no advice, I did not crate train my kids. But I will say that as he matures you will see that he'll go through phases. Like the barking when he didn't before. They will test the boundries and also become more aware of themselves and their surroundings. So it's very likely that the barking is just him seeing how you'll react. If you are able to let him bark it out without disturbing others, I would suggest letting him do that. As for going outside to potty. Perhaps try taking him out to actually play for awhile, then bring him in for a very brief time making sure he stays right with you so that he can't potty in the house. Then take him back out to see if he'll potty, no playing this time. Keep repeating until he potties. I assume you have a command you are saying when he goes potty. Be sure to say it as soon as he potties so that he'll start associating the command with the action. Good luck, I'm sure others will chime in with their input.

| I am a new yorkie mom myself. But i have learned that when i take Andy outside i say "go potty" and do not acknowledge his at all afterwards until he has peed or pooped. Then i praise him. At 15 weeks, he now knows to go to the door when he needs to go potty. I do not crate mine. I have a childs pen. i use. Because im at work all day. He has a sleep area, food and water area, a potty area if needed, a play area. It has been a total hit. He only pees one time while im gone. At 15 weeks his bladder isnt even fully developed. As for barking, I do not acknowledge it at all while in his pen. Nor do i look at him unless its time to come out. He stopped to barking after 2 days. (once he learned mommy doesnt say hi when i bark) He does still bark at playtime and sense hes teething lol. Im sure its just him trying to get into the swing of things. As soon as mommy gets up Andy goes outside before i do anything. after eating or drinking anything, Andy goes outside. And before bed time, Andy goes outside. I wish you the best of luck. I am struggling with the teething issue where everything goes in andys mouth to chew lol. Including mommys hands. Best of luck to you!

| Thanks for the input. I made a discovery. I went home to let Jack out, and he had only been in the crate three or so hours. I am 98% certain he peed when he heard me at the door or when I entered. Any advice on excited/scared pee? Perhaps he was so happy he peed, or maybe he did thought there was an intruder? |
