| Scared pup Joel has been acting strange today and it all started when the wind blew the door shut upstairs. It wasn't that loud but maybe it freaked him out more because he knew no one was up there, he was shaking a lot. So then I took him upstairs to show him it was just the door thinking that would help but it didn't And he is jumpy to noises upstairs and keeps looking up there. The funny thing is he still goes upstairs but just keeps acting scared. I want to cuddle him but I know that would make it worse so I'm trying to just ignore it. It's so sad because he never gets scared so now when it's just the door he's scared I just wish I could tell him it's nothing lol Last edited by ilovejoel; 07-31-2013 at 10:20 PM. |

| Poor Joel I hope he gets over his fright soon. When Pebbles was frightened to go upstairs a few months ago ( a singing toy duck frightened her when it burst into song) I didn't cuddle her. Like you I pretended I didn't notice her fearful behaviour. I brought her upstairs with me and then played games with her up there and did a few tricks with her and rewarded her with chicken. She forgot about her fear as she enjoyed her playtime, training and treats and was soon back to normal. Would that work with Joel do you think? |

| I hope that doesn't last long... If anything, my two freaks me out when it comes to upstairs. There were few times when we were playing downstairs and they'd suddenly stop. Look upstairs and turn their head from side to side as if someone is walking across the hallway. And then they just resume play. -_-; |

| Tibbe used to go through things like that all the time. He'd hear a single very loud or sudden noise and seem to get over it but be jumpy for the rest of the day. Now that he's in good health, that hardly ever happens but when he was feeling bad with his MVD issues, he had lots of bouts of that like he had when I first got him. I finally got him a Thundershirt and that would put him to sleep. I would say "Relax" as I was closing it on his body and helping him settle and lie down. For some reason he would usually just lie down(he doesn't like wearing clothing so he just goes down) and then he'd be asleep very quickly as I was over and over saying "Reeeeee - lax" slowly. Before I got the Thundershirt, I would get him busy chasing a ball or doing his training to keep him distracted. Teaching him a new trick worked pretty well, too. Finally it got to the point that just the word "Relax" worked as well as the shirt itself. Once he got rid of the toxins from his poor handling of proteins due to his MVD, he doesn't have those jumpy days where a loud sound sets him off for the whole day. He'll hear a sound, may/may not jump but then goes on with his day now, maybe a little extra alert for an hour or so but that's all. Sometimes just telling him to relax will make him lie down and let himself go to sleep. He's back to acting like he was before he had a year or two of bad symptoms and return of his panic attacks like when I first got him. Hope you can find some ways to help Joel through this if it begins to affect his happiness. Feel better, Joel!

| Aw poor thing, Peanut is the same way. Usually a nice walk will help him or even playing with him.

| I've heard that cuddling them when they are frightened reinforces the fear rather than trying to get them to get used to it or ignore it. Don't know for sure, as our first instinct is to comfort. My Meika has become frightened when the gardeners use the weed eater and leaf blower. She shakes and hovers around my feet and has to be touching me. She is 5, and this never bothered her before, just in the past few months. She is the most outgoing of my 4, so it surprises me.

| Poor Joel. I hope he is able to get past this fear quickly. Teddy went through a stage where he was afraid to sleep in my bedroom. I am not sure what triggered it, but it may have been th red Christmas lights that our neighbors had. It took him about a year to get over it.

| Actually, that is what I was going to speculate upon...dogs are much more sensitive to stuff like that and while I am not sure there are "ghosts", per se, I think there are inexplicable things that dogs see that we don't.
