I have to explain the opposite. This is how my convo usually goes. "Yes, she's small, yes people call her size of yorkie teacups, but- She's not a teacup, she's the runt of her litter."

Yorkies are conversation starters. No matter where you go with them, someone will make some comment. I comment on them (a yorkie) when I see them, even without Cinders!

I try to get others to come to Yorkietalk whenever I see/ meet other yorkie members. Or if someone has an interest in purchasing a yorkie. I scribble down the site addy for them and hope they make it here. That's the best you can do when you want them to learn more about this wonderful breed.
She so darn cute with her lil head looking out. Of course people would have to comment.

Bottom line? People in general are just plain ignorant about the breed. They have little or no clue about the standard. They've seen the teacup ads, the celebrities with purse puppies & they think that's normal. You just have to grow a thicker skin, I think, although what would be considered rude to comment on someone's child's size/looks, people think it's perfectly okay to do to their pets. (i.e.: your kid looks kinda big for an Asian dontcha think? And his eyes aren't slanty enough"

I agree with most of the above posts. If you're in the mood & feeling generous, do kindly educate, if not, give 'em a passing quip & move on.

BWAHAHAHA!!!! We are guilty of doing this! But we don't mention the eyes. We are Asian but if we meet someone who's kid is way tall, we usually ask if they are mixed. Actually we just say, what is he mixed with? Oops. Lol. Sometimes they say he's not mixed!

But as for Uni, I get comments she's both big AND small. She's about 5.5-6 lbs depending on if mil has been feeding her or me.

It'll be interesting when I get my girl, and as she grows, to see whether I get the sort of comments you guys in the US seem to get a lot of If ANYONE dares make a comment about teacups I'll soon put them right!!!!! I'll politely educate them then send them here!!!
I put my Cat Saber on my kitchen scale today and you know what I got . . . Error . . . he is too big I guess I have to get a battery for the human scale for this one

I hate the whole size thing too. I am constantly explaining that there is no such thing as a "teacup ", and Phoebe is just a bit smaller than standard. People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them breeders claiming to have teacups are out to rip people off.

We get the same comments here about how small our girl is too. She is 7 lbs and we are always asked if she's a puppy (she's 4 yrs). Of course in our neighborhood, big dogs seem to be the favorite. There is an Irish Wolfhound in the neighborhood who looks almost as big as a horse so I suppose to most of the people out walking their large dogs, she looks like a puppy.

So frustrating! Everywhere we go, everyone fawns over Rosie and says awww she's soo little, lool at the teacup yorkie! And they COMPLETELY ignore Luma! Guess what, Luma is 7.6 lbs! I wouldnt even consider her a teapot but because she is built longer and taller than usual she automatically must be a silky terrier right? Here's the clencher -- Luma and Rosie have the SAME sire and dam but born a year apart. Rosie was not the runt of the runt of the litter but at 2.6 lbs at 6 months old she will obviously end up smaller thann luma. Not what I intended, I had hoped they'd be the same size because Luma is perfect to me, but I love them both the same!

It really, really bugs me that Luma is always ignored, because cute=smaller the better, at least to some people. This is why dogs end up in the shelter. All these threads about oh my yorkie is too big....WHY does it matter? Goodness...its all just so sad... A yorkie is a yorkie.

I can understand how frustrating it can be!
Rufus weights 12 pounds and Nena (morkie) 6 pounds.
I personally prefer Rufus because he is so sturdy and not that fragile
Over here I don't get comments about how big he is, they just ask if he's a yorkie

Awww bless I use baby weighing scales which I got on Ebay three years ago. We've fostered so many abused and starved cats that I wanted something to record weights so I could see how they were progressing George has actually lost a little weight as he's been off his food for the past few weeks since our other FeLV cat, Suzi, went to Rainbow Bridge He was 12lb 6oz in October 2012, 13lb 2oz in April this year (and looking porky - too many treats *whoops* ) but is now back to a healthier weight. Only 1lb but that's probably the equivalent of 2st in humans

Here's the type we have We only paid about £20 on Ebay and they've been well worth the price I'm sure they'll be invaluable to weigh my Yorkie pup when she comes home too

Whenever I am out in public with my friend and her 4lb and 6lb yorkies, they always get fawned over, and Jackson tends to just get looked over or "is that their dad?" hahaha. For some reason when 3 yorkies are in public and one is bigger it automatically means you must be breeding, and the bigger one is the parent. But to be honest, I don't mind, because Jax doesn't really LIKE being ooohed and aweedd over and would prefer strangers just walk by him, lol.

Ha! It all depends on who you run into, huh?

I've been on a single walk with ZoE on our local walking trail, and run into someone who comments on how big of a yorkie she is. Then, maybe 10 minutes further down the trail, run into another person (small male, very big dog...I'm not saying he's compensating, but...) that makes comments like "I didn't know you were allowed to leash & walk a mouse here." so rude!

Too big for some, too small for others...but just perfect for me!

I just got into an argument with a friend of mine yesterday because for the third time he called Bentley "little rat". He doesn't do it to be mean, he's just joking, but I was just tired of hearing it.

To be fair, my neighbor has a little tiny yorkie and when shes walking him, from the distance, it does look like shes walking a rat ... Lol ... Sorry if I offend anyone but that's the truth.

I know how you feel! I get both comments tho. People who have big dogs come by and comment on how small she is and crack jokes about her size which for the most part I feel okay about. One time I was at a pet store and saw a girl carrying what I think was a 9 week old yorkie and I commented how cute she was. She then asked me if mine was a teacup and as soon as I said no, I swear she turned her nose up at us. My husband was carrying ours in a carrier and might have gotten too close to look and she clearly backed away and turned around. My Chloe is only 5lbs now but is at least an inch taller and longer than most.

I seriously wondered if her "teacup" will still be considered that after a couple months! People here pay over $2K for yorkies advertised as teacups and then feel cheated when their "teacups" end up growing to standard size. I've seen some sold in the $3k range too for a "guarantee".
