So tired of ... "She's big for a yorkie" I can assume all the teapot mom's and dad's can relate. My perfect little Chloe is 5 months now and weighs 7 pounds. Every time I take her out, at least one person has to comment on her size. This is my first small dog, so of course she is tiny to us. She is healthy and perfect and we will love her no matter how big she gets, but it gets so frustrating having to explain that there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie and that Chloe is pretty average. My friends with yorkies have males which I find to be often smaller than females too. I guess I really feel like people are questioning if she is a "true yorkie", like I want to carry her papers in my pocket! This is more of a vent that anything, just irritated with stupid people! I wish people could just say how cute she is and stop pointing out her size! Thanks, I feel better now! |

I always get "omg they are so tiny"...Mia is 12lbs...so go figure, Mini is your average 7lbs give or take a pound or two depending on her current ever fluxuating health state...Vinnie is smaller but he is in the middle of a growth spurt...when people ask, I say they are all Terriers...people know that word and let it go at that, I don't pussyfoot around when someone asks about teacups I immediately say "omg don't let anyone rip you off that's just a word the cons use to get you to pay too much money...if anyone tells you they breed teacups it means they are trying to rip you off and are bad breeders"...immediately. |
Thanks for the reply. I needed to vent! I do agree that many here may be used to the smaller puppymill dogs. Of course when people comment on Chloe's weight, they usually have a story of knowing someone who's tiny yorkie had health problems and broken bones... I just wish that people would not insist on judging my perfect little baby! Where was your brother stationed? White an or Ft. Leonarwood? |
My last yorkie, Chelsea, was 5lbs, and ZoE is almost double that. She's not a fat yorkie, just bigger, taller, longer. I often get "wow! what a big yorkie!" |
My Yorkie is 4 months old and already 4lbs ... People are always telling me how tiny he is even for a puppy ... I guess it depends on what people are used to, everybody has big dogs in my community. I dont say anything back to them, I ignore them. It frustrates me to no end when people comment about his size "Oh there goes the killer in the neighborhood!" That's the comment I got yesterday. I'm pretty sure it is not meant to be mean or rude, but when everybody says the same thing about him it gets old :thumbdown I understand that you are frustrated, especially when they ask if he is "real". But 7lbs is really tiny! Weird ... |
No one has ever actually questioned her "pureness" but it seems as if they are implying that she not really a yorkie because of her size! I tell myself they are just jealous because this perfect little dog is not in sitting on their lap! Lol! I guess if they really knew what they were talking about they would realize how wrong they are about her. |
I get that about Barney all the time and he only weighs 4.5 pounds, but he is tall. One lady was going on and on about her friend who bought a teacup and the mom only weighed 3 pounds and dad weighed 2 pounds and the puppy was going to be tiny. Eyes roll now. I tried to educate her, but it didn't work. Our first yorkie weighed 15 pounds. So a 7 or 8 pounder seemed tiny to us. Smile politely and suggest they buy the book Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies. |
Paris was a beautiful 13 lb Yorkie. I loved every pound of him. |
size I have a male yorkie who is 3 years old and is 15 lbs. I constantly have ppl say he is not a yorkie! I tell them he is but they are stupid and swear he cant be. Im like "whatever" I know what he is and i know his parents, he outweighs their combined weight. I did have a female yorkie that I rescued two years ago and she weighed 15 lbs also. some ppl think that because AKC standards are 7 lbs and under that they cant be pure if they dont weigh that. |
Sounds like I'm not the only one who has to deal with this silliness. I agree that substandard breeding has led so many to believe that yorkies should all fit in a purse! Being 7 pounds, my dog is still tiny, but for whatever reason, people think she should fit in the palm of my hand! The book Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies would be an eye opening read for many. I want to get her a tshirt that say "There is no such thing as a teacup!" Might keep people from opening their mouths! I agree Becky, trying to educate someone about the breed is pointless, I must learn to just smile and say " more to love!" |
I've actually have had people do the opposite in Draco's case. I've heard people say how cute he is then say something concerning a friend with a yorkie who is larger and that their friends yorkie must not be full yorkie. He's 5.5lb and 6 months. So far only one person questioned if he was a yorkie and they were saying something about yorkies having a more pushed in snout. I feel like yorkietalk has already prepared on how to handle the uninformed people you run into. =] Though it hard not get agitated with people who question/imply that your yorkie isn't full breed. I'm surprised I haven't run into more people trying to tell me about Draco living in Los Angeles and all. |
I agree |
I just feel like it's rude to discuss anyone's size in general, so it wouldn't occur to me to question a dogs' "pureness" based on their size, as well. Especially to their owner; especially if I don't know much about the breed. People are strange. |
Don't let it bother you. Sometimes people comment on size as a simple observation. My boys are larger and people will often say that they have a Yorkie or a family member has a Yorkie half the size. Then they will compare coat or color. Usually they don't mean it in a negative way. |
Maximo, I agree that I should not take it personally. I guess it's the "momma bear" in me! I really don't think anyone means anything negative, it just gets irritating that instead of just commenting on her cuteness, I feel some are almost speaking of her size as a negative, but likely they are not. Dogs, like people, come in all shapes and sizes, I just wish some would realize that! Here is a pic of her hanging by the pool, this pic cracks me up! |
