| Distempers Okay so Miley has had 3 distempers but her veterinarian is saying dogs normally get 4? Is this true? How many distempers did you all give your puppies?

| They get 3 rounds of puppy shots, then they get the 1 year booster. Maybe that's what your vet is referring to?

| Her exact words were "4 distempers. One at 6,8,12,16 weeks" Miley had 2 distempers at the breeders and she got one at 16 weeks with me but they're saying she needs another?

| That's a confusing part.. Mom gives babies anti-bodies to baby. So, you if wait until 8 or 9 weeks for puppy shots, and give shots every 3 weeks, they're older than 16 weeks which Vets recommend. Vets recommend you give 4 shots by time they are 16 weeks old. And why 16 week cut off?? It is confusing and all 4 of my Vets have different reasons and time frames. If I give shots at 7, 10, 13, and 16 weeks it works by 16 weeks so that's usually what I do |

Miley had distempers at the breeders at 8 and 12 weeks and then got one with me at 16 weeks. Should she be getting this 4th distemper? She will be one day shy of 20 weeks then.

| I know some think that we over vaccinate, but I'm a firm believer that I never want parvo or distemper so I do what my Vets recommend. |

| It takes 2 vaccines for a puppy or a dog to develop immunity, provided that the maternal antibodies that a pup gets from the mother dog are gone from their system. The maternal antibodies disappear from the pups anywhere from 6-12 weeks of age. Vaccines given to a puppy that still has active maternal antibodies are destroyed by those maternal antibodies (MA) and do nothing to build immunity in the pup. It's too expensive to test each puppy for active MA, so vaccination is started anywhere from 6-12 weeks of age. Some pups lose their MA at 6 weeks of age, and will benefit from the vaccine and develop their own antibodies. Some pups won't lose their MA until 12 weeks of age, and will need 2 more vaccines to develop immunity.

| If Miley's MA were still active at 12 weeks of age, then she will need one more vaccine in addition to the one given at 16 weeks to establish immunity. You may be able to have a titer test done to check her levels of antibodies. It's more expensive than a vaccine, but you could ask the vet about doing it. Also, wait at least 4 weeks after the last distemper to get her Rabies. They really shouldn't be given at the same time, although many people do. It's just safer to wait a month in between vaccines.

| I give my NeoPar (for parvo) at 4 weeks...it over rides moms immunity against parvo, so my babies are super protected against parvo...then I give my first puppy shot at 8, then 11, then 14 weeks.....none of my new owners have ever said anything about their vet wanting to give a 4th shot after 14 weeks......6 weeks is too early to start puppy shots, as they are, according to vaccination protocol, still being protected by moms immunity. |

| It depends when theywere started. In your case a 4th is not needed unless the vet is not trusting the breeder gven vaccines. The final vaccine needs to be given at or after 16 weeks.

"Vanguard® Plus 5 is recommended for the vaccination of healthy dogs against diseases caused by canine distemper, adenovirus type 1 (hepatitis), adenovirus type 2 (respiratory disease), parainfluenza, and parvovirus. All viruses in this vaccine are modified live versions of the virus. Recommended for the vaccination of healthy dogs 6 weeks of age or older. Dosage: Vaccination of healthy dogs 6 weeks of age or older. Aseptically rehydrate the freeze-dried vaccine with the sterile diluent provided. Shake well and administer 1mL subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Primary vaccination: Healthy dogs 6 weeks of age or older should receive 3 doses, each given 3 weeks apart.Annual revaccination with one dose is recommended." I start my shots at 8 weeks of age, 11 weeks of age, 14 weeks of age.....and using the vaccine I use on my dogs, that gives them the complete course required for immunity. At 1 year, a booster shot is given, then that is it as far as I am concerned....I will not give any more core vaccines. If I was concerned about protection, I would check titers.... | |
