Thanks for your insight. It give me a few ideas.

Something some of mine love is for me to mix Pedialyte and chicken baby food (I mix all kinds of stuff with Pedialyte, depending on which dog like what), and freeze it into ice cubes, then put the cubes in my ice shaver, and make shaved ice "snow cones" for the pups! They love this stuff!!

I'm still searching for preventatives for water intoxification.

Here is what I have found so far"

1. Limit water play and intersperse with other activities, especially if you have an avid water lapper upper.

2. Use of a lifejacket might reduce the dogs ingestion of so much water - ie the life jacket keeps the head up.

3. I like the salt/pedialyte idea.

4. I also like treats interspersed throughout activity.

Wow, just reading this now, Lola probably spent 8 hours since the 4th playing in the lake, I never heard of this. So if I am reading this correctly is the reason this happens because the dogs have lost sodium? Lola wears a life jacket and does not try to drink a lot of the lake water, but since she is constantly jumping in after a toy with mouth open I am sure she is ingesting the lake water. I am going to have to be more careful, so thanks for the tips and post more if you have them.

This is a great post / warning bc I don't think many are aware of how deadly water intoxication can be. It happens in people too, most notably in schizophrenics who sometimes have an uncontrollable impulse to drink and drink and drink water. When I used to work w/ schizophrenics, we'd have to watch their water intake bc of dangerous it can be. Death can result from it, as can heart attacks due to the overwhelming fluid load on the heart.

Several years ago, they had a couple of disc jockies hold a radio station contest, and they had people drinking water...the one who could drink the most water in a period of time, won the contest....some woman won the contest, became ill very quickly, and died from water intoxication!~

More like the sodium has been diluted in the cirrculatory system by the overload of water....
