Water intoxication I just learned something new the other day and I wanted to share it with everyone that may not be aware of it. A facebook friend post about her yorkie getting water intoxication from playing in a kiddie swimming pool with just a couple inches of water in it. i've also heard to never fill the water bowl outside with water from the hose. only use filtered water... at least that is what I do. thanks for posting this. |

Thanks for posting this. I had not heard about water intoxification before, and I swim with my pups all the time. I am just trying to find out more now. I do limit the time in each individual foray into the water. Our maximum time is 30 minutes. I also have them drink from their water bowls, so that they don't drink the lake water. When as we frequently do, have a day at the lake, with repetitive swim times, they have homemade treats in between swims. I am wondering now if I should make up special treats, with a bit of sea salt on the dried treats.... |

Thank you for information. I had a problem with Max guzzling from the faucet during baths. Knowing this couldn't be good for him, I have stopped him. It makes bath time twice as hard because I have to keep telling him "no" almost the entire time. I wonder if eating right after baths was the only thing that prevented him from suffering this condition. |
Thanks for this post... When I took Tink kayaking with me she would bite at the water, tiny waves, wake from the kayak, any and all splashes, plus lean over the side and drink the river water (brackish/mix of fresh and salt water). I knew it wasn't good for her to do so I tried to stop her. Needless to say we didn't get very far. She finally settled down to just barking at everything! I was more worried about bacterias, but now thinking, with small dogs it probably doesn't take much to have a problem. |

I was familiar with water intoxication/electrolyte imbalance from my medical profession. Also, from my childhood, where I grew up in Kuwait, where the temp daily reaches 115*-125*, and we all had to take salt tablets on a daily basis. In the summer time, I automatically use Pedialyte in my water bowls outside for the dogs. I also have pretzels, those little round ones, with salt on them.....I will give one of those, per dog, during our time outside.....and if the temp has sky rocketed to over 100*, I will give another pretzel when we all go inside the house.... Time outside in the heat, in water, is limited, especially in the heat. Thank God, I have never had this issue, and pray I do not! This was a great post...thanks for posting! |
Thank you for posting this. Just yesterday we were at my parent's pool and Couv gets psycho around the splashing and tries to drink the pool water. I kept telling him no, but eventually had to put him inside because I knew it wasn't good for him. He also attacks sprinklers and hoses. This is definitely something I will be watching for. |
