I believe you are correct in saying that there is something wrong with Joey besides plain hypoglycemia. I had a 9 1/2 year old who started having episodes of hypoglycemia and she was eating and doing the same thing she had done for 9 yrs. Had a hard time convincing the vet it was not simple hypoglycemia. Of course it turned out that she had developed liver shunt due cirrhosis of the liver. It sounds similar to your little man and it does usually show up in younger puppies. At least at that young age they can have the LS Surgery. Now a dog over a year old is not a good candidate for LS Surgery. |

I came on the see how Joey is doing. It's good that he's stable. I'll keep praying for both of you. |
Just was wondering how joey was before he got that shot for tapeworms? I remember many years ago I had bought a pug puppy. He was healthy until I took him to the vet and he was given a shot of Doncit, withing days my poor puppy was running such a high fever, I rush him back to the vet, he was running an 106 temperature, so the vet tech put him in a cold bath, bought his temp down to fast and cause him to have permanent brain damage and I had to put him down. I wonder if the shot had something to do with Joey not wanting to eat? I pulled up some information online about Doncit. Droncit is the normal drug used to treat tapeworms.. Adverse reactions to the shot would include vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea and lethargy. When the injectable drug is used, there can be pain, swelling and inflammation at the injection site. You can read about this here: http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/praziquantel-droncit-drontal/page1.aspx |

I don't know about doing BATs on Joey...I suppose you could but they often go up and down and are not totally reliable and since he is so young and has been so sick, I just dont know...I guess get feedback from your vet on that one.. You could ask them about doing an ammonia level. If he is having liver issues, that should be elevated. |
Wow, what a roller coaster of a thread! OP, you did NOTHING wrong! The breeder did everything wrong, but try to save Joey when she got him back! I'm going to jump on board with most everyone else in saying that there is more going on than Hypoglycemia! Hoping Joey makes it, and hoping the breeder does the right thing by you! |
Ok I don't know where you live. I am in Oklahoma City and here there is the Bella Foundation who helps with dogs medical bills. I had a friend that had to use them and they were so helpful. Look them up and see if they are in your area tonight as you have to contact them with all info. If not try googling organizations that subsidize dogs medical bills in our area. I hope this helps |
I am glad that Joey is stable for now// hope you get some answers |
I've just read this thread and it made me tear up just imagining how you and joey are feeling. I know how they can steal your heart in just seconds! And it's hard to imagine them gone. I'll be praying for you both! Joey seems to be a strong pup just like his mom! I'll keep checking on this thread to see how it progresses. |
Looking for an update on Joey. What a sad way to start life with a new love. I agree with what the others say about Nutri-Cal. It works miracles when used properly - in emergency situations followed by complex carbohydrates so that the little one won't have a "burn and crash" episode. With pups that are not eating well, a very small amount of Nutri-Cal(english pea size dollup) given about 15 - 20 before a meal often stimulates appetite. This should NOT be part of a regular feeding schedule, only a tool to encourage a more normal eating habit. |
