I am not saying the vets are wrong, but we did have a 14 week old yorkie who had to be fed every 2 hours around the clock. There was nothing wrong with him....my vet did suspect there was at first but in the end he was fine! He simply needed more time than others. That owner was doing the same...putting food out hoping it would work for him, but it did not.
Praying that it is the same for Joey.

Great article on hypoglycemia! So true, I have a little one and she just turned 5 months and 1.88 pounds. My days are spent arranging times so I am available for her feedings and make sure to watch her eat. Karo syrup is always in her water and she is given cheerios and cut apples between meals to keep her sugar up. Thank g-d she is doing great and actually gained a lot this past month since I have had her. Who knows-she might be a teapot when she grows up!!! LOL

Joey is pretty much the same today: not better but not worse either. I hope that this is just a bump in the road that the tiny yorkies seem to get.

I do pray that Joey gets better. I do have concerns about giving a puppy nutrical when it is not needed. Sometimes I think breeders and puppy owners are contributing to the rise in hypoglycemic puppies by over doing the Nutri-cal. I guess it is something we will never know. I agree. Nutrical should never be given regularly to a puppy as a preventative for low blood sugar. A puppy should be able to regulate their blood sugar on their own if they are eating regularly. Nutrical should be kept in an emergency type situation or if you suspect your puppy is becoming hypoglycemic. By giving a puppy nutrical throughout the day, the puppy's blood sugar shoots up, causing a lot of insulin to be produced, and then the blood sugar will come crashing back down. Blood sugar doesn't shoot up and down so rapidly when a puppy eats food. Giving nutrical regularly can screw up the puppy's natural ability to regulate blood sugar and insulin in its body.

I really think this puppy has something much more serious going on than hypoglycemia. I think the hypoglycemia is secondary to another problem. Has he had any blood work done? I would really recommend a blood chem panel and also a bile acid test.

I absolutely agree with this. The overuse of Nutrical boggles my mind.

You see I didn't know that, my vet told me to feed him a little nutrical between meals because he wouldn't eat. But what i meant was he got a lot of glucose. Intravenously and dextrose t the vets office not that he got excessive amounts of nutrical. He did get bloodwork done but apart from elevated WBC's nothing else was learned.

Breeders vet believes that this is stress related made worse by vomiting, diarrhea, and not eating.

Right. I didn't mean you did anything wrong. I just see so many on YT advocating the use of nutrical regularly with puppies whether they are eating or not. And this overuse of nutrical is not good. If your puppy was not eating well then I can understand why your vet would recommend giving a little nutrical during the day. Since your puppy isn't able to regulate it's blood sugar with the IV given or being fed every couple of hours, it just reinforces to me that something is seriously wrong. I would definitely have a bile acid test done. It's a paired test done before and after a meal, but even just one blood draw could give you an idea of what his bile acid level is. He may not have a liver shunt, but liver shunt puppies usually fail to grow (are small), don't eat well, and become hypoglycemic easily.

Very interesting! I now have a better understanding of hypoglycemia & the importance of of regular meals.....thanks for the info!
