| Let's I.D Bumper! Is she a Silky or Yorkie?? Hey everybody, I know this question must pop up a lot, but I'm hoping with some photos and info we can pin my girl's breed, and maybe even her age? I work at an animal shelter in Australia, little Bumper was a stray with a mouth full of rotten teeth, a grade 1 heart murmer, grade 4 luxating patellas and severe cataracts that had lead to blindness. But despite all of this, she was the happiest little dog who ever deserved to live out the rest of her life in health and happiness, however would be very hard to rehome with so many medical 'issues'.. so I took her on. She gets around fine even though she's blind, and has since had dental treatment where 13 teeth were extracted and the rest were cleaned. She has plenty of strong chompers left and eats normal dog biscuits with ease. Her microchip said she was 6.5yrs old, however we then found out that she was once rehomed through another shelter and they may very well have estimated her age incorrectly. Given the condition of her teeth and how far along the cataracts had gone, the vets increased her age estimate to approx. 10 years. My question to you guys is - have you heard of many yorkies or silkies at only 6.5yrs with these issues? Or do you think she's more likely 10yrs old? Now for breed I.D.. when I first met her she had a very short coat, which I thought was naturally short so thought she was a silky - however I now know it was clipped short, as in the 5 months that I've had her her coat has not stopped growing and she's beginning to look increasingly more like a YORKIE! She weighs 3.5kgs (7 - 8lbs), has a dark grey - black saddle and sandy tan head, paws and underbelly. She has a tiny little muzzle/nose and carries her ears and tail erect. I'm hoping I'll be able to attach some photos - I'll attach ones of her with a clipped coat and also more recent ones with her Yorkie looking long coat. The photo with the towel/brushes/hairdryer etc is today! Hope you can help Cheers! Bec and Bumper |

| I don't know enough to weigh in on this one, but I do want to welcome you to Yorkie Talk and say that I think it is so wonderful of you to take this gal into your home. I think Bumpers is a cutie, love the pic of her on the grooming table, her hair looks very pretty. Donna

| She looks like my Brandi. Brandi was a rescue too so I don't know her background but my Brandi is probably a silky too. From what I understand the differences between a yorkie and silky are silkies have a more rectangular body and longer snouts. Where as yorkies have a square body and short snouts. I'm no expert though I am only going by what I read. It doesn't really matter to me as I am totally in love with her. Welcome to YT! Bumpers is a cutie no matter what she is. Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome and thank you for taking Bumper in when he needed a loving person the most. It's hard to tell for sure but he looks more Yorkie to me. I had a very elderly rescue and he was a yorkie but his face looked like he could have a little silky in him. He was estimated to be about 14 when found because all his teeth were rotted to below the gum line. He had the white film on his eyes and later became deaf and blind. I would guess Bumper is closer to 10 based on his cataracts. Here's a pic of Nikki after some tender loving care who sadly passed last summer at the guesstimated age of 18-19. Bumper is a little sweetie.

| I'm thinking yorkie. My rescue, Sophie, is 4-5 years old. We had to have probably half her teeth removed and she has a cataract in one eye. She now weighs 8 pounds. She did come from a puppy mill but the vet's she's seen are pretty sure of her age. She is a sweetheart and does well, just startles a little when you come from the affected side. Mills are not known for their stellar care of their "breeding stock". Maybe she came from one. Many will.dump their dogs when they can no longer breed. |

| Bumper is a cutie! She could be a silky yorkie mix. Her body length looks more silky. Hard to tell about the face/nose. Either way, she looks very sweet and you are good for taking her in.

| Wow wow wow!! Thanks so much for all the replies already! It's 6am here in Aus and we're up getting ready for miss.bumper's big day at the eye specialist. She is having 2 prosthetic eyeballs implanted to make her healthier and more comfortable! So, I will do a better reply/individual replies later and also a new thread about her surgery. Talk soon! |

| It's difficult to tell if she's Silky, Yorkie or even a mix between the two. As for the cataracts, she could have Congenital (juvenile) cataracts that appear before the age of 6 years. Also bad teeth can and usually does happen with neglect. LP can show up at just a few weeks old. So, all in all, your girl could be younger than you think. I'm so happy she has found such a loving home. Bless you for giving her a home she more than deserves.

| Just a quick note to say the specialist just called. Surgery is all done and I pick her up at 3 (in 4 hours). She apparently did very well! |
