Angry Finding a good vet is so hard!!!

I thought I had finally found a perfect one and have had great luck with Guinness going there BUT today I asked the vet tech why Stella's file stated she was a mixed breed and was told because anytime a dog is mixed with more than one breed that is what they are called and he could tell she was not a full yorkie because she weighed 7.8lbs and her ears did not stand up!! NOW keep in mind Guinness weights 13lbs and his chart clearly states YORKSHIRE TERRIER!!!!!!!!!
He then goes on to tell me that I should not be feeding them Taste of the Wild it is a bad food and that I should ONLY be feeding them Science Diet (they just so happen to sell that brand) when I mentioned that Dog Food Advisor list my food as a 5 star food and what he is trying to sell me is only a 2 1/2 star he informs me that they are just trying to get people to buy my brand.. ummm funny I get the feeling that is what YOU are doing!!

I just do not get it... if you go into being a vet doesn't that mean you love animals?? NOT just money?????

I think with dog food, It is important to do your homework and feed your baby what agrees with them and sometimes it is trial and error type of thing. I agree a lot of vets sell science diet and for some dogs it is the only choice. Some dogs do fine on it.
My Daisy is on royal canine SO bc she has issues with producing crystals and a lot of dog food out there does not make the special prescription dog foods.

So I don't think you have a bad vet I just think that this is one area you disagree on

Food I can get past the telling me she is a mixed breed because she weights over 7lbs and her ears do not stand up at 5 months... that I can NOT get past!! I would hope they would know their breeds a tad better then to say it does not make her a REAL yorkie

I can see where you are coming from! Over the years, I have had 2 other vets and I guess the 3rd one is a chime! I love our vet clinic! The staff and the vets are so wonderful. They take the time to talk, examine and just truly care for animals. I can call any time and someone will talk to me about my concerns. They are very informative and update me on new vaccines, area decease outbreaks, etc. As far as dog foods go, my vet sells different brands like your vet, but they don't push it. They actually will special order a brand for people if their pets are having skin, intestinal issues or allergies! They are so open and I totally trust them!

They shouldnt be writing down she is a mixed breed when you told them shes a yorkie. I wouldnt go there for that reason also. s The food isnt any big deal vets arent really schooled on nutrition and they do prescribe the science diet rx food for sick dogs so they do probably think science diet is a good food. I dont think its a terrible food myself it just depends on what type of ingredients you want to feed your dog and everyone has their own idea of that

The breed thing is what killed me the most. But when he stated that about the food and I mentioned where I got my info it was more the way he reacted when I asked about the info.. You would have thought I was mental ward patient that just said an alien came down from mars and told me what dog food to purchase if I went to my Dr and said I read that eating a certain food would help me I would hope he would either be able to give me valid reasons of why or why not and if not just tell me that he will have to research it and get back with me instead of just telling me they are trying to get me to buy that food is all.. YES I know I am just being picky and expecting way too much from my vet lol

You should expect alot from your vet! He should have known the breed, the food, and why Stella's ears aren't up too! I expect my vet to know more than me, and I'm lucky I found a smart 1! They treat Cinders like a little princess, and tell me to keep "our" pup healthy and happy as we leave. OUR means the vet's office considers her one of their pups and dote all over her from the time she gets there till we leave. And she isn't the only Yorkie that visits them so that to me means alot of love is coming out of there for all animals

I'd run away as fast as you can from that guy!

I you dont feel right find another one. your feelings are most likely right on.
Jess broke her leg and I brought her to my vet who put a cast on. 5 weeks later she tells me "It didnt work at all I think we should amputate" I almost passed out in the room and had to walk out. She looked at me like I was insane...I said "not an option find another one..she reluctantly sent me to a surgeon who was wonderful. I was told by two other vets they NEVER should have put a cast on the leg, it never would have healed that way. She is fine now..that vet? Not mine anymore..
Go with your gut!!

I sold a Yorkie to someone that took him to a vet...that vet also told the person the dog was NOT a Yorkie, but a silkie, based on nothing but his size. He did not even structurally resemble a silkie...I could NOT believe what was being said....got a lawyer.....they submitted the dogs neuter receipt, but it said Silkie in the Breed section....My lawyer advised to contact the vet as well as the owner, and inform them this person was not sold a silkie and when I received a proof of neuter on the pup I sold that person, the dogs registeration papers could be sent to the owner. I never received any other communication from the new owner or the vet. I hope they DNA'd that dog so they could see how STUPID their vet is....not that it would have made any difference to them, I am sure. It is inconceiveable that a vet can be so bold as to make a statement that a dog is not a purbred just from looking at it....such statements can cast doubt on a breeders reputation and business....not to mention, if the dog is DNA'd, and it turns out to be a purebred, then what does the vet say???? "I am sorry, I made a terrible mistake and made a stupid guess about your dog", or "You got an ugly purebred".....

Did the vet or vet tech say that Stella doesn't look like a pure breed based on weight and ears? Vet techs have no business saying anything, and I would not return to that office if it was the vet. That is ridiculous.

I had a vet receptionist ask what kind of dog Max is -- Max was already an adult with full coat and topknot. When I said Yorkshire Terrier, she said Max doesn't look like one because his ears are "enormous." I walked in a proud mom and that hurt me terribly.

When Mina goes to the vet,she is checked from stem to stern even if we are there for a tummy issue over stress (Tuesday last a week ago). They talk about how cute she is and hold her like she is a baby.
I think you need a different vet and I would like to suggest that you go shopping NOW when you dont have a huge need. When a mom is looking for a peditrician, she interviews several before choosing one. If the Dr gets insulted because you are asking him/her a list of questions then you need to move on.
I got lucky, the vet that I have now purchased the office from my last vet who retired. The older vet would make house calls,,really miss that. But my current vet is wonderful. If I go out of town and something happens to one of the animals, the kids can take pup in and I can pay when I get back in town. When Bunkey was sooo sick and then passed away I wracked up a heck of a bill and had to make payments, they never once asked me for the balance. They didnt even call me when Bunkeys ashes were back at the vets, they called my DH so I wouldnt be upset.

Vet tech did and when I mentioned it to the vet her only comment was "oh yea but she is a sweet and healthy girl and after listening I can tell you she has a heart!" Umm yea no $&@% lady!!

The last vet that told me there is "no such thing as a biewer yorkie" and that I CLEARLY have a morkie, I left. I have been taking my animals to that clinic for 20+ years, and volunteered there when I was younger (different owners, but still) and they think I dont know what MY dog is?!
I still get asked if hes a mix, but I correct that.
However, you clearly have yorkies...yours are even the right colors! Dont they know ears dont always stand up?!

At first today I thought my pegnancy hormones were just taking over and I was mad over nothing, I go in with Stella all happy just getting shots and end up feeling like somebody just thought me my child was a mutt and that I so not know how to feed her even grrr

I have one other issue with this vet, Guinness was on a flea medicine with my old vet that worked GREAT!! This vet put them on Frontline Plus and I can not for the life of me keep fleas off of them now!! When I mention it I am told well maybe I am just not doing it right. Now I know I am not the smartest person in the world but how hard is it to put drops on the base of their neck pulling the fur back?????

Frontline doesnt work in FL. We have crazy fleas. Use an oral tablet so it works through the system.
