Advice needed: introducing new pup to current dog

It's been about 3 days and Kimchee is not taking kindly to the new pup, Arthur. Arthur is doing great. He's so friendly and tries to play with Kimchee all the time. Kimchee gets annoyed and never wants to play with him. For example, when I throw the ball, Kimchee will run to fetch it. Then Arthur will follow her and try to get the ball too. Once Arthur gets near her, Kimchee drops the ball and walks away. It's really sad!

Kimchee also growls at him when he comes close to her a lot. They both fit comfortably in the car seat. However, Kimchee tries to jump out of it and avoids Arthur like he has the plague.

Is this normal? What can I do to help them get along better?

Yes, it's very normal. The pup always wants to play and the adult doesn't. Allow Kimchee to growl and correct the pup, without interfering. You have to make sure she still has her place in the family, so that she will not be jealous of the pup. Arthur, by dropping the ball, is showing Kimchee that she’s the boss, and that's a good thing. It may take as long as a year before they actually start to show you that they like each other. Right now tolerating each other is what's important, don't make them be together and as someone mentioned allow Kimchee to have a place where she can get away from Arthur. Don't interfere in arguments unless it's really bad i.e., one is in danger of its life. If Kimchee has been properly socialized, she will not hurt the puppy, but she might scare it when she means “no. Honestly, he's going to try to nurse her, hump her, and be all around annoying, so she's got to be able to say "no" to him, without getting into trouble from you. Otherwise, she'll be the one abused. When he learns her rules, they will get along better.

Yup, sounds like everything is normal. Good advice here! Just for sure make sure you have a place that Kimchee can "escape to" when needing to get away from the rambuncious Arthur

PHEW! Great to hear. Actually, Kimchee is the one who drops the ball then walks away as if she's not interested in playing with him. Arthur does submit to her when she gets annoyed and barks at him.

I feel relieved that this is all normal. We'll be patient!

Oh, did she usually bring the ball back to you? I guess she's saying Arthur can have it when she's done with it. I've never had dogs interact much with a ball, one will get it and the others will watch. Sometimes a longer stuffed toy, will encourage them to play, each one will take an end and pull it from each other, but in some ways this might encourage fighting. After about a year, my two started playing, it was kind of a tag involving a toy, and they would try to get the other one to chase them.
