YT 500 Club Member | Disgusting poop eater My precious little darling is a ... poop eater. I'm so ashamed. She is so sneaky about it. We have a large owl and hawk population here, so my babies are paper trained. Before I can even get to the paper she is grabbing a chunk and hiding with it. What can I do? I am totally grossed out every time she does it. Is there something I can put in their food so she won't want it? |

| She's sneaky because she knows it upsets you. The poop isn't disgusting to puppies, young dogs and even some grown dogs but if you will shoo her away with an "oh on" or "no" and give her something fun to play with, in time and knowing you are going to come stop her and have that look on your face and tell her no, she will eventually get the message and stop it on her own. One of the theories is that they eat it for the falderal that it causes - the eeewww's and the yucks! and all the carrying on we do - such excitement and attention - it is a certain and sure way to get a human right to them with a lot of energy amped up to boot. Dogs just love excitement - even if its bad excitement - for a time. But over the long haul, they do learn that with that excitement you are usually there to nip it in the bud and act all unhappy and stay away from them afterward and no kisses or close-up play and they really do learn that it is in their best interest to keep us happy with them. They really do learn that in time and try to adjust themselves to stay away from what we disagree with and makes us avoid them. If you just walk over and stop the behavior with a "no" without a fuss, redirect her and take it away to the toilet, she will soon think "what's the point - she's just going to stop me every single time anyway and no party here". A lot of people say the pineapple works for them and it is worth a try. Most dogs stop doing this once it loses its novelty and we stop them time after time in addition, which begins to discourage the behavior. Besides, more mature dogs usually have no interest in it. I have never had an adult dog eat poop or hide it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | 1) feed a very high quality, higher protein food (cheaper foods have a lot of filler - this filler goes undigested thru the GI tract, coming out the other end as still 'food'; so, it smells like food making it appealing) 2) Get S.E.P. - Solid Gold's Stop Eating Poop - worked for us w/ Wylie when he was a puppy 3) Feed raw - those poos don't have all the undigested food; and, instead of smelly/moist poos, they're small, hard, and dry

YT 500 Club Member | Thanks for the info. I haven't tried the pineapple and I just happen to have some. I'll give that a try first. As for the quality food and the not getting all hyped up, sounds like I'm doing that right. |

| Poop Eating can be hard to deal with. There are many different ways to work with a dogs. Some things work well for one dog and one trainer and not so well for another dog and trainer. Being flexible is important for trainers who want to be a positive problem solver. You have been given some good advice about things you can try with your puppy. Please don't let your dog eat any poop, his or from other animals. My girl Gracie ate an owl pellet and had to have surgery to repair a blockage in her intestines. If the calm passive correction approach does not stop the poop eating, you might want to try this method outlined below. My Yorkies know my face, they read positive or negative expressions quite well. It is ok to show your discuss at the poop eating or carrying. I give the cue word 'LEAVE IT !' I make gaging sounds and pick it up and go straight to the toilet with it saying Nasty, Nasty. I do the same thing on walks, cue Leave It and Nasty, Nasty. Yorkies read human facial expressions so well, they know the difference between anger and this is a bad thing, expression. The 'this is a bad thing' expression means no reward for doing this poop carrying thing at all. I carry the offender into the bathroom with me and the poop. I flush the poop then sit the offender on the counter and use a wet wipe to wash their face and mouth. then I put them down and ignore them for awhile. Often the offender will slink off head down and hide for a few minuets. They are not afraid of Mommy just confused. After a time or two they know poop carrying means no reward at all. Usually they stop doing it. Right now poop carrying does have a reward a chasing game and excitement. Be consistent. Do try to pick up poop ASAP. Many, many dogs like to roll in smelly things, dead things, smashed bugs, animal poop, and pee. Why ? There are a lot of theories, which still don't answer the question of how do I get them to stop ? ! I use the cue Nasty, Nasty when caught in the act. And/or you can squirt them with a blast of water. Many pups out grow laying on and rubbing/ rolling on their pee-pad. I did have on stubborn foster boy had to potty train him to go outside only. I had to block his access to the pee-pads. Hope this will give you some ideas. Hugs

YT 500 Club Member | OMG! Thankfully, and I thought I'd never say this, she is only eating her own poop and occasionally my male yorkie's as well. I have started with the pineapple today. So, we'll see how that works for now. |
